So please get into a comfortable cross-legged seated position on the floor if you can for this meditation,

Or if you need to sit in a chair,

That's fine.

Just check your posture to make sure that your back is upright,

Comfortable and relaxed.

Relaxed and upright are really the two key factors here.

And just at the beginning of this meditation,

I'll ask you to keep your eyes gently open,

And to allow your eyes to fall into a gentle gaze,

Either on the wall in front of you,

Or on a simple object you might have,

Such as a bell,

Or a candle,

Or some other neutral object,

And just use your chosen object to gaze upon.

Your eyes are soft,

Slightly open,

And gently gazing,

Letting all other distractions in your visual field recede into the background.

Letting all sounds in your auditory field,

And all feelings in your kinesthetic field,

Just to remain at the periphery.

You're not trying to block all the other sense impressions,

You allow them to come and go.

But you don't see them as a problem.

Your main focus is just gently on your chosen object as your visual focus.

Whatever names,

Judgments,

Labels,

Evaluations,

Or thoughts,

Just let them flow.

Just be aware of that.

Just see that labeling process,

And let it go.

Allow even the sense of a separate object to become redundant.

We're just seeing,

Simply looking,

Without any concepts interfering,

But also not trying to force the concepts away,

To push them down.

We can simply notice how full of analysis and concepts the mind is.

As you gaze at your object,

See if you can notice your own awareness.

So rather than chasing after thoughts,

Just let the mind be.
