Healing Begins With Gentle Willingness: When Healing Hurts
by Reuben Lowe
When we’re experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, difficult memories or uncomfortable feelings, our natural response can be to resist or escape them. Sometimes healing begins with something much smaller: gentle willingness to experience a little of what is already here. Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness and trauma-informed practice, this reflection explores making space for thoughts, emotions and body sensations without forcing ourselves to like them or make them disappear. An invitation towards acceptance, emotional processing, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, inner awareness, spiritual growth and deeper self-connection, ending with a short rhyming affirmation.
