In Sanskrit, Sumaya means a long-awaited dream come true, while in Arabic it translates as a little piece of paradise. Both of these definitions mirror our hearts’ intentions and inspire our service. Our logo is a Mayan glyph found in Chiapas, Mexico representing the fountain of life or the budding growth of a flower, and this too moves us ever forward. Villa Sumaya, located in Santa Cruz la Laguna on the shores of Lake Atitlán, was conceived in 2001 with the purchase of the lakefront Maya Rose House, originally the vacation home of a Guatemalan family. Over time, in addition to renovating the Maya Rose House for style and comfort, we added a restaurant, a boutique shop, our welcoming courtyard, a hot tub, and a sauna, as well as four healing huts where we offer a wide variety of spa services.

Villa Sumaya serves abundant, family-style, plant-based buffet meals three times daily in its open-air, lake-view restaurant—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—crafted from fresh, locally sourced organic ingredients grown in the center’s own gardens or by nearby Mayan farmers. Expect vibrant, colorful plates bursting with Guatemala’s finest: ripe avocados, pitaya (dragon fruit), plantains, black beans, heirloom corn, squash, tomatoes, fresh herbs, and house-roasted coffee.

Schedule

A typical day will involve a morning vinyasa practice, a guided activity (hike, kayak, cacao ceremony), some free time, and an evening yin/meditation practice.

Testimonials

info

Trip was absolutely amazing! The lake was gorgeous and the view from the rooms and all common areas was sensational. The resort and rooms are very clean, well staffed, staff was super friendly and the food was incredible! The food may have been the biggest surprise, as the entire group of 18 each said it blew them away. The services (massage, astrology, acupuncture, yoga, etc.) were top notch. Ben and Victor are both incredible teachers/people and the whole trip was so well thought-out and so organized. Can honestly say it was one of the best places I have ever been, and my wife and I travel a lot.

Would absolutely do this again if given the chance. Wonderful and genuine people combined with amazing food makes for an amazing trip. Throw in the beautiful surroundings and activities available make this a solid 13 out of 10 trip!

This group created such a special experience for me and my friends. We laughed, opened our hearts, and realized how lucky we are-not just to have each other, but now to have all of you too. Expanding our community in this way truly warms my heart. Ben, thank you again for bringing us all together. Your hard work does not go unnoticed! It takes so much dedication to create something like this, and you’ve given us all a truly profound experience.
