Okay,
So today we're talking about gratitude.
Not the force kind where someone tells you just be grateful when you're having a rough day,
But the real kind.
The kind that sneaks up on you when you actually pause long enough to notice what's already working in your life.
If you're someone who thinks you can't meditate because your brain won't turn off,
Well here's some good news.
Your brain isn't supposed to turn off.
That's not what meditation is about.
Your mind is like a busy street.
Thoughts are just cars driving by and we're not trying to stop traffic.
We're just learning to watch it without getting swept away by every passing thought.
So let's start simply.
Find a comfortable position whether you're sitting or lying down.
There's really no perfect way to do this.
You can close your eyes if it feels right or just soften your gaze downward and take a breath in through the nose.
Let it out through your mouth.
Nothing fancy.
Just breathe in like you've been doing it your whole life.
Your body already knows how to do this.
Now here's the thing about gratitude.
It's not about pretending that everything's perfect or ignoring the hard stuff,
The bad stuff.
It's more like turning on a light in a room that you've been sitting in for a while.
The furniture was always there.
You just couldn't quite see it clearly.
So now notice that you're breathing without having to think about it.
Your heart's beating.
Your body is working.
It's keeping you alive moment by moment.
It's not something you have to earn or figure out.
It just happens.
See if maybe you can feel a little appreciation for that.
Just a gentle acknowledgment of this body that carries you through each day.
It might have issues.
There might be problems with your body,
But it's still going right.
And if your mind starts to wander off to your to-do list or maybe a conversation from yesterday,
That's completely normal.
It's just a car driving by.
You can notice where it went and then gently,
Without judgment,
Bring your attention back to your breath.
So now let's try to expand that circle of gratitude a little bit wider.
Just thinking about people in your life.
Maybe someone who made you laugh recently or that friend who listens to you when you need to talk.
Silly things that kids say.
It doesn't have to be profound.
Maybe it's someone who makes your coffee at the coffee shop or someone who held a door open or a friend who sent you a funny meme.
Those little connections,
Those tiny threads that weave through our days,
The ones that make us smile without really even thinking about it.
Just keep breathing.
Let yourself feel whatever comes up.
Maybe it's warmth and maybe it's sadness and maybe it's a little bit of both.
Gratitude isn't always a bright shiny feeling.
Sometimes it's quiet and deep,
Like recognizing how much love has surrounded you,
Even in the ordinary moments.
You're going about your day and if your mind is making lists or trying to do this practice right,
That's just your brain being helpful in its own way.
And you can thank it.
Thank you for trying and then come back to the gentle noticing.
We're not trying to force gratitude.
We're not trying to do anything specific.
We're just creating space for it to naturally emerge.
You can maybe think about something that brought you comfort recently.
Maybe as simple as a cup of coffee or clean sheets or a song that you have on repeat.
These might seem like small things but they're not.
They're actually building blocks for your life.
It's the ordinary magic that we normally just rush past when we're focused on what's missing or what's wrong.
Just let yourself rest in that for the moment.
You don't have to hold on to it or make it permanent.
Just let it be right here,
Right now.
Good.
So this practice isn't about convincing yourself that everything's perfect or that you should be satisfied with less than you deserve.
It's just about recognizing the fullness that's already present,
Even alongside the difficulties and the longing for more.
Okay,
Let's take one more deep breath.
In and out.
Feel your body here in this moment,
Having taken this time for yourself.
That's something to appreciate too.
The fact that you showed up,
That you gave yourself these few minutes of gentleness.
And as you move through the rest of your day,
Just see if you can carry this quality of noticing with you.
Not as a rule or something that you have to remember,
But more like a soft background awareness.
There's good that's already here,
Waiting to be seen.
Again,
It's not about finding huge reasons to be grateful.
It's just about letting yourself receive the small gifts that are constantly being offered.
That sip of water when you're parched,
Right?
The relief of sitting down when you're tired.
You don't have to be perfect at this.
It's a practice.
Some days it'll feel easy and natural,
And other days it might feel forced or distant.
And both are completely normal.
The invitation is simply to return,
Whenever you remember,
To this gentle noticing of what's already there.
Your busy mind,
Your wandering thoughts,
Your very human tendency to focus on problems.
All of that's welcome here.
That is what makes you perfectly human.
And that too is something to be grateful for.
Now go ahead and take one last deep breath in,
Let it out.
You can wiggle your fingers and toes,
Wake up your body.
If your eyes were closed,
Go ahead and open them back up and go about your day.
Just keeping that soft background awareness with you.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy,
And may you be at peace.
Thank you so much for joining me.
