Have you ever felt like your mind is a flurry of darting thoughts,
Like a school of fish scattering in all directions?
That's something we all go through.
We get caught in the current of emotions,
Pulled by stories or tugged by reactions.
And at one moment we're fine,
And the next we're stressed,
Or angry,
Or overwhelmed,
Or confused.
But what if you could step back?
What if,
Instead of being one of the fish in that school,
You could become the pond?
Let's explore that.
Let's take a moment to settle in.
Let your body rest in whatever position feels steady and supportive.
Let your eyes gently close.
You can soften your gaze downward if that feels more comfortable.
And just take a nice,
Slow,
Deep breath,
And let it go.
Let's do that again.
Breathe in,
And out.
Just feeling how the breath settles the body.
The way every inhale and exhale creates just a little more space.
This space is like a quiet pond.
It's still,
Maybe clear,
Open.
And as you sit here,
Those little fish,
Your thoughts,
Your emotions,
They're just swimming around.
They come,
And they go.
They might stir the water,
Or ripple the surface.
But the pond,
The pond stays.
The pond doesn't chase the fish.
It doesn't argue with them,
Or tell them to stop swimming around.
The pond just is.
It's holding everything with gentle awareness.
Let yourself rest as the pond.
Breathing in,
And breathing out.
Whatever thoughts arise,
Whatever feelings swirl,
See if you can let them be just like fish.
Just let them swim.
Let them move.
You don't need to follow them.
You can just breathe.
Just notice.
Inhale,
And exhale.
You don't have to breathe any certain way.
It's happening automatically,
Whether you think about it or not.
And if a thought pops up,
You can maybe label it.
Silently say,
Ah,
A fish,
And then let it pass.
There's no need to chase it.
There is no need to wrestle with it.
You are the pond,
And you are just holding it all with ease.
It's so simple.
It's the gift of awareness.
It's not about controlling what shows up.
It's all about how you relate to it.
That's the beautiful thing about mindfulness.
When you're the pond,
You just make the space.
When you're the fish,
You get caught.
And if you do get caught,
That's okay.
Even if you find yourself swimming in circles,
Well,
You can always return.
You can always become the pond again by just feeling your breath,
Feeling your body,
Whether it's sitting or lying here,
Wherever it is.
In this moment,
Quiet,
Steady,
Present.
You might notice that thoughts are still moving.
Emotions are still bubbling to the surface.
That's okay.
That's part of being human.
You're not trying to empty the pond.
Just to rest as it is.
Just breathing.
Just being.
And if your mind wanders,
That's all right.
Just notice it.
Another fish.
No need to judge the fish.
Just return to the breath,
To that stillness underneath.
Sharon Salzberg reminds us that mindfulness isn't about getting rid of thoughts.
It's about learning to meet them with spaciousness and kindness.
You are the spaciousness.
You are the kindness.
You are the pond.
So let's take one more deep breath together,
In and out.
And as you open your eyes or lift your gaze,
Just see if you can carry that awareness with you.
Whatever swims into your day.
Emails or moods or surprises.
You don't have to be the fish.
You can always pause.
You can always breathe.
And you can always return to that still observing presence.
Be the pond,
My friend.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
And may you be at peace.
Thank you so much for joining me.
