An original poem by Heidi Fischer, that describes the difference between two types of interactions. The first, represented by a coat of thick black paint, is based on silence, secrecy, and the inability or unwillingness to discuss important things. The second, like a flower, is a connection that is willing to learn and grow together, even when there have been mistakes. The poem begins and ends with chimes and light music playing in the background. Music by Katzen_Tupas.

Transcript

This black paint covers it up.

A heavy brush thickly layering a tar of silence,

Oppressively sticking to anything it touches,

Performing the ritual regardless of the murky coating.

But I'm drowning in this soup of silence,

Pleasantries exchanged in banal mediocrity.

The calm boredom is not healthy given the circumstance.

But there it is,

The nothingness,

The stillness,

The quiet resolve to tiptoe on bleeding digits.

Shh,

Shh,

Shh.

Drip,

Drip,

Drip.

Censorship.

I learned the other day what it's like to take a chance.

I was afraid and I did it anyways.

It took a lot of courage,

But I said that I'd been hurt.

It didn't stick there,

Hotly protesting in an unrelenting void.

It was information.

It was an invitation to do better.

It was an offering to connect.

And they did.

And I did.

Blooming.
