Greeting Each Moment With The Heart That Cares
by Mark Nunberg
In the Buddhist tradition, the quality of metta, or loving-kindness, is expressed as the heart that cares, the heart that includes, the heart free of any ill-will. Just as water can fill any vessel, we can meet each moment with the quality of metta. When the heart meets suffering, metta is expressed as compassion. When it meets beauty, this goodness is expressed as sympathetic joy. When it meets the ambiguous or undefinable, it is expressed as equanimity. When we touch into these expressions of love, they have the nature to expand, to radiate out in all directions. To touch into this inherent abundance we begin here, in this very moment. When we touch this moment just as it is it becomes clear, “I do care about this heart. I do care about this world.” From that place we can offer a simple wish “May this heart be at ease. May the goodness of this heart continue, increase, and know no bounds.”
