Hello,
Welcome.
My name is Lew Redman.
Thank you so much for listening to this little talk.
The other day,
Someone asked me why I do what I do.
Part of me feels this question deserves a profound altruistic response,
Like to ease the suffering of all beings.
While easing the suffering is what we do when serving our purpose,
My answer is more selfish than selfless.
I said,
Because it helps me feel closer to God.
Other less noble things I could say are,
I love the freedom it gives.
I love that I get to do it from anywhere in the world.
I love choosing what to work on and creating out of inspiration.
I love witnessing others feel,
Heal,
And transform.
My ego also loves the validation.
I love not having a ceiling on how much money I can make,
Which also means I don't have a floor.
Yet,
When I come back to why I started,
It came from listening to the call of spirit and glimpsing the divine comfort that comes from moving in its direction.
Intimacy with God is a primal longing.
It's not only at the core of what I do,
It's at the core of everything we do,
Even if we're unaware of it.
It's underneath the striving of the athlete to reach the pinnacle of their sport or the painter to make art that leaves a legacy.
It's why we enjoy hobbies,
Whether golf,
Running,
Chess,
Knitting,
You name it.
It allows the thinking mind to slow down so we can enter a flow state and glimpse the eternal,
If only briefly.
Longing for God is behind the three false idols,
Money,
Power,
And fame.
The Wall Street banker thinks money will fill a God-sized hole.
The politician believes status and power will do it.
The actress feels that everyone knowing her name will solve her problems.
By the way,
Understanding which false idol you lean towards can be helpful.
For me,
It is fame.
If they could only experience the real one,
They would know that is what they seek.
I don't feel God in every moment I'm working,
But it's in the moments I get the taste that affirms my path and keeps me coming back for more.
I don't always get it right.
My ego loves to get in the way,
But that's part of the game.
There's a verse in the Course in Miracles that says,
I am here only to be truly helpful.
I am here to represent Him who sent me.
I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do because He who sent me will direct me.
I am content to be wherever He wishes,
Knowing He goes there with me.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal is the essence of life purpose.
As we heal our wounds,
We heal our world.
We become beacons of light others gravitate toward.
If you are listening to this,
Keep going.
Keep doing your work.
Keep closening the connection that you have with the divine and watch how that transforms not only yourself but transforms the people closest to you and ripples out into your community.
Not all of us need to make a living shining our light.
Many are content deepening their spirituality,
Doing their day job,
And enjoying their hobbies.
This is great.
You can live your purpose exactly where you are at with the day job that you have.
You don't have to quit and go on this crazy journey if that doesn't feel like you.
People are living their dharma every day in the kindness of their hearts,
In the school teacher that goes to school and loves their work.
It's really about shifting how you're appreciating what you're doing that allows it to be in service of your purpose.
I want to make that really clear.
However,
Maybe you're like me.
Maybe you feel a inner knowing that you're here to be a beacon of light that guides others back home and you sense that doing so will bring you closer to home.
You may also feel the fear,
Doubt,
Or insecurity that comes along with such a vision.
If that is you,
Go check out my course,
Five Principles to Build Confidence,
Create Momentum,
And Activate Your Soul's Work.
It's right here on Insight Timer.
Go check that one out.
I think it's really going to help light a fire,
A spark in you so that you can light a fire and a spark in others.
If that's not you,
That's okay too.
Like I said,
Keep doing your work.
Keep shining your light.
You will serve your purpose in your own way.
You don't have to make it your full-time gig at all.
Thanks for listening.
I have profound reverence for the opportunity to support you on this journey.
Let me know how this landed by leaving a comment and continuing doing your work.
Thanks so much.
See you soon.
