Hey friend!
Welcome to tonight's sleep story.
My name is Lisa and I'll be tucking you in this evening.
Our story tonight is called The Girl Who Knitted the Galaxy a Sweater.
Before we get started though,
Let's get comfortable.
Let's take a moment to relax,
Fix your pillows,
Maybe readjust your covers one last time and make sure that everything is just right.
Maybe you need to adjust the volume on whatever you're listening to this on.
Shut off your lights,
Take a deep breath in and let it all out.
Let's do that again.
Take a nice deep breath in,
Hold it at the top and let it all go.
Close your eyes and let's begin.
Once upon a time,
Under the twinkling expanse of the night sky,
A young girl named Lucy peered through her backyard telescope at the marvels of the universe.
Lucy felt a deep connection with the celestial bodies that dotted the cosmos.
She often dreamed of flying through the Milky Way and dancing among the stars.
When Lucy wasn't stargazing,
Her favorite hobby was knitting.
She loved spinning colorful yarns into cozy scarves and mittens and hats.
As her hands clicked the needles,
She would gaze out her window at the moon and imagine what it might be like to knit something for the galaxy.
One night,
As Lucy traced the constellations with her telescope,
She realized she wanted to knit something special for her galactic friends.
The stars look a little bit chilly out there,
Lucy thought.
I should make them something warm.
Lucy decided she would knit the galaxy a sweater.
Not just any sweater,
But the biggest,
Warmest,
Coziest sweater the universe had ever seen.
Over the next few days,
Lucy planned and prepared to knit a magical galaxy sweater.
The next day,
Lucy got to work mapping out astrological charts and constellations to incorporate into her sweater design.
She wanted to capture all the magic and wonder of the Milky Way in yarn.
She took out large sheets of graph paper and sketched constellations,
Plotting each star system that she wanted to include.
Lucy decided to feature all her favorite celestial bodies.
Orion,
Ursa Major,
Cassiopeia,
And more.
On one graph paper,
Lucy mapped the sweeping outer bands of the Milky Way.
She included dashes of stardust and clouds of glowing nebulae.
On another sheet,
She drew the inner solar systems,
Circling bright yarn colors for each planet she would knit.
Once her galactic maps were complete,
Lucy gathered her supplies.
At the craft store,
She spent hours searching for the perfect yarns.
She found radiant supernova silver,
Gleaming comet gold,
And shimmering meteor blue.
The softest yarns in shades of moonbeam white,
Twilight purple,
And rocket red went into her basket too.
With her cosmic color palette ready,
Lucy could hardly wait to start knitting.
Back home,
Lucy sat on the floor of her bedroom,
Surveying her materials.
The graph paper galaxy maps were taped to the walls.
Balls of galactic yarn filled her knitting basket.
As she cast on the first starry row,
Lucy smiled dreamily,
Imagining draping her creation over the Milky Way,
Wrapping its celestial bodies in the warming embrace of her galactic sweater.
She clicked her knitting needles faster and faster,
Lost in her vision of exploring the wonders of space.
Knit one row,
Fly past a nebula.
Pearl one row,
Loop around a planet.
She started by knitting the central star systems,
Incorporating the sun in shining gold,
Plotting the planets and metallic yarns of red,
Blue,
Green,
And silver.
Around these,
She knit the rocky asteroid belt dotted with bits of stardust.
She incorporated twinkling stars,
Then bound off a burst of comets streaming by.
Moving outward,
She shifted to creating the Milky Way's luminous spiral arms.
Billowing clouds of purple and blue nebulae emerged from her needles,
Each shimmering thread carefully placed.
Stars clustered together in bursts of metallic stitches,
Dazzling against the darker yarn.
Lucy delighted in crafting every celestial wonder she could imagine.
The galaxies of Andromeda and Triangulum eventually found form in sweeping swaths of glittering yarn.
Even tiny Pluto glided by in icy blue,
Far from its fellow planets.
Every part of the cosmos captivated Lucy.
She watched meteor showers and incorporated falling stars into her design.
Golding comets with trailing tails of silver,
Trailed across knitted skies.
Lucy spent evenings charting the stars and mimicking their patterns in her stitches.
She sat on her bedroom floor,
Knitting needles clicking rhythmically as dreams of exploring the universe spun through her mind.
She imagined soaring through nebula clouds,
She had crafted strolling lunar landscapes in her sweater's pockets.
All the magic of the galaxy was flowing from her imagination through the clicking needles into tangible form.
Soon,
Her galactic sweater was growing so large that Lucy had to drape lengths of it across her bed and walls.
When the last star had been secured,
Lucy would embark on the adventure of a lifetime across the fabric of space.
For now,
She happily lost herself in bringing the wonders of the cosmos into hand-knitted form.
After weeks of interstellar knitting,
Lucy had finally finished her magnum opus,
A handmade sweater for the galaxy.
She gently folded the enormous creation,
Packing it neatly into the red and white rocket ship she had built herself in the backyard.
Lucy filled the rocket with plenty of snacks for her journey.
Star-shaped peanut butter sandwiches,
Moon cheese crackers,
And dehydrated ice cream shaped like planets.
She double-checked that her charting equipment,
Camera,
And telescopes were securely on board as well.
Zipping up her star-printed spacesuit,
Lucy buckled herself into the captain's seat.
Ready for liftoff in T-10,
9,
8… Lucy whispered to herself as she finished pre-flight preparations.
She pressed the gleaming red launch button,
And the rocket engines began rumbling and steaming.
3… 2… 1… Blast off!
The spacecraft sped down a ramp and shot rocketing into the sky on a plume of smoke and fire.
Lucy was pinned to her seat at the force of her ascent,
Eyes wide as Earth fell away beneath her.
Breaking through wispy clouds,
The inky blackness of space and spray of stars soon surrounded her.
Lucy gazed out the round window in wonder.
The Milky Way galaxy gleamed ahead of her like a jeweled spiral road.
Don't worry,
Galaxy,
I'll be there soon with your new sweater,
Lucy called out excitedly.
She flipped switches on the control panel,
Steering the ship onto her planned course through the sparkling celestial realm.
Lucy sighed happily,
Watching cosmic dust drift past her rocket.
She was finally on the starry adventure she had always dreamed of.
With her creation wrapped safely beside her,
She flew bravely into the beckoning galaxy ready to explore its mysteries and share the gift that she had made especially for it.
At last,
Lucy soared into the heart of the Milky Way galaxy she had imagined so vividly in yarn.
Gazing out of the rocket ship window,
She was dazzled by the cosmic splendors that now surrounded her.
Majestic purple and blue nebulae billowed like mountains glowing with ethereal light.
Lucy flew through their misty clouds gasping at their beauty.
In the darkness,
Entire solar systems sparkled like jewel boxes tethered by gravity.
Like a space-bound explorer,
Lucy carefully maneuvered her ship to photograph and chart each new wonder.
As she drifted by planets,
She waved merrily at any alien creature she spotted below.
Hello down there,
I've brought your galaxy a gift,
She would call out.
Surprised extraterrestrial faces would blink back curiously at the little earth rocket passing overhead.
Lucy found herself lost in entire stretches of the boundless sweater that she had created.
In some areas,
She flew through the knitted facsimiles of the very celestial features that now surrounded her.
She had crafted this corner of space from her imagination and now she sailed through the real thing.
After weeks of exploring star-strewn voids,
Cosmic storms,
And undiscovered planets,
Lucy decided it was time.
She selected a swirl of stars perfect for displaying her masterpiece.
With care,
She eased the hand-knit galaxy sweater from her ship.
Unfurling it slowly,
She draped the rippling fabric over the gleaming celestial sphere like a custom-fit coat.
A perfect fit for you,
Dear galaxy,
Lucy said proudly,
Snapping photos to remember the moment forever.
Lucy had just put the finishing touches on dressing the galaxy in her handmade sweater when a glowing ship approached.
Out came a delegation of celestial beings,
Stardust-skinned moons,
A comet-riding space cowboy,
And a nebula-eyed elder draped in galactic garb.
Welcome,
Earth Girl.
We are the Cosmic Council,
Guardians of the Galaxy,
They proclaimed.
We wish to thank you for this warming gift you have created.
Lucy was invited aboard their ship where a party was already underway in her honor.
Colorful gases swirled in crystal goblets and platters of meteor macaroons and dark matter cupcakes floated by.
Let us celebrate this act of cosmic craftiness,
The council announced as trumpets made of warped space tooted.
Lucy celebrated with her new starry friends,
Recounting her knitting adventures and learning celestial secrets in return.
Many selfies were taken posing with various beings against the backdrop of her sweater-dressed galaxy.
As a grand finale,
The council led Lucy back to the party ship's observation deck.
There was a dazzling meteor shower display that had been coordinated across the now cozily-sweatered Milky Way.
Like galactic fireworks,
They streaked brightly through the inky blackness in an awesome display of light.
Thank you for bringing such joy and warmth to our celestial home.
You are always welcome here,
The cosmic beings told Lucy as they bid her farewell.
Exhausted but beaming,
She slowly flew her ship back through the twinkling stars towards planet Earth below.
Lucy could hardly believe the sights she had seen and the friends she had made.
She penned every detail into her voyage journal,
Eager to always remember her knitting creation's cosmic celebration.
As incredible as her space-faring sweater adventure was,
A feeling was growing in her heart.
She missed her home.
She missed stargazing with her telescope from the backyard instead of rocketing inside the celestial scenes.
She yearned for her cozy bed instead of the small bunk in her rocket ship.
But most of all,
Lucy missed her family.
As the tiny blue marble of Earth drew closer,
Glowing against the dark canvas of space,
Lucy's excitement grew.
She flew over the continents and oceans that she had studied from afar for so many nights.
Lucy spotted her hometown and then her neighborhood and finally her house.
She landed the rocket gently in the backyard.
As the engines powered down,
The back door of the house burst open.
Out came her mom and dad and younger brother,
Tearfully welcoming her back from her long cosmic journey.
Lucy ran into their arms,
Hugging them tightly under the stars.
Later,
Tucked into her own bed with her celestial Explore Achievement badges pinned up on the wall,
Lucy sighed contentedly.
She was so glad to gift the galaxy the sweater she had lovingly crafted.
Yet she was also happy to be back in her own corner of the universe,
Even if only for a little while,
As she was already dreaming about the next adventure that might await among the stars.
In the weeks after her triumphant galactic knitting voyage,
Lucy delighted in telling her family all about her starry travels.
Over hot cocoa and cookies,
She would share vivid tales describing the celestial wonders she encountered.
She showed them stunning photos of nebulas and planets,
Framed by her cosmic handiwork.
Her brother's eyes grew wide as she recounted meeting the mysterious moon beings who taught her about black holes.
Do you think the galaxy liked the sweater?
He asked one night as they sat in the backyard under the stars.
I hope so,
Said Lucy,
Though it looked pretty small once I reached outer space,
But every stitch was made with love.
Despite missing the galactic grandeur,
Lucy found pleasure in little things,
Laughing with friends,
Reading books curled up in her room,
And knitting by the fireplace.
On clear nights,
She would gaze up through her telescope,
Waving to the twinkling stars,
And knew that somewhere far out her creation was keeping the celestial realm cozy.
Maybe the galaxy will write me a thank you note,
Lucy joked to her dad one evening as they admired the sparkling sky.
And then,
All of a sudden,
A bright streak of light flashed overhead,
As if on cue,
A meteor traced across the dark expanse as the galaxy winked back its distant greeting.
That's all for this evening,
My friend.
Sweet dreams.
