Fierce Compassionate Friend is a guided meditation practice that balances and embodies our fierce (yang) and tender (tender) energies as we can connect with our inner strength to resource ourselves, tap into our inner wisdom, and empower ourselves. This practice is part of the Fierce Self-Compassion course created by Dr. Kristin Neff and I am honored to be co-creating this program as well as one of the first teachers to be teaching this 8-week course globally.

Fierce,

Compassionate friend.

I'd like to invite you now to make yourself comfortable getting into a seated or lying down position.

And then when you're ready,

Gently closing your eyes all the way or perhaps softening your gaze in one particular spot.

Taking a few deep breaths to settle into this moment to settle into this body.

If it feels right,

Putting one or both hands on the heart or some other place on the body that feels supportive and soothing.

Letting this posture be a reminder of bringing loving attention to this one here.

And now imagine yourself in a place that is safe and comfortable.

This could be a place in your home or in nature.

Or perhaps sitting on a warm beautiful beach or curled up around a warm fireplace.

Perhaps sitting in a grassy area overlooking beautiful flowers.

Or this could be a place that's imaginary,

Like floating in clouds.

Really anywhere you might feel peaceful and safe.

Letting yourself linger there and enjoy the feeling of comfort that this place has to offer.

Using as many of your senses to really transport yourself there.

Soon you'll be receiving a visitor,

A strong,

Powerful,

But also tender and loving presence.

A fiercely compassionate friend.

An imaginary figure who embodies the quality of caring force.

Notice what image arises for you.

This friend may be someone who embodies the qualities of someone that you've known in the past,

Like a strong and protective teacher or grandparent.

Perhaps someone that you know now in your life.

Or it can also be a fictional character from a book or a favorite movie.

Or this being maybe a figure completely from your imagination,

Like a warrior goddess,

Or an animal like a Jaguar.

This being may also have no particular form,

But just appear as energy or glowing light.

Please allow an image to come to mind.

And now you have a choice to go from your safe place and meet your fears friend or to invite them in to your safe place.

Please take this opportunity now to notice what you would like.

Imagine yourself with your visitor.

Imagining yourself at the right distance.

Whatever feels natural for you.

And now allowing yourself to experience what it's like to be in the company of this being to be in the company of their strength and determination.

Their wisdom.

Noticing how loved and protected you may feel.

Noticing how much they care about you and want the best for you.

There is nothing you need to do right now except to experience this moment.

This friend is knowledgeable and sees clearly understands exactly what's going on in your life right now.

They see where you've been and also where you're going.

They have great wisdom and understand what changes you need to make so that you can be well and thrive.

They know perhaps behaviors that you may need to let go of or situations that are not working in your life anymore.

Perhaps even challenges that you may need to take on or meaningful plans yet to realize.

This being may want to tell you something,

Something that is just what you need to hear right now so that you can make needed changes in your life.

Please take a moment and listen carefully to what this intelligent being may have to say.

And now you may also want to express something to your friend or ask them for their guidance about a change that you would like to make in your life.

Feel free to do so now.

Taking a few more moments to really soak in this being's presence.

And now allow yourself to realize that this fierce being is actually a part of yourself.

All the feelings,

Images and words that you are experiencing right now flow from your own fierce and tender heart.

Receiving this message,

Receiving this connection to your fierce and tender heart.

Connecting with your own caring force.

Finally,

When you're ready,

Allow the images to gradually dissolve.

Allowing the image of this fierce,

Compassionate friend and everything that may have come up to gradually dissolve in your mind's eye.

Remembering that this caring force is always within you,

Especially when you need it the most.

Know that you can call on your fierce friend anytime you wish.

So now when you're ready,

Gently opening your eyes if your eyes were closed,

Perhaps stretching your body,

Looking around your space,

Connecting with a pleasant object in your space.
