Let mindfulness permeate your days in small ways, like enjoying the beauty of a sunset, the smell of the rain, or the smile on a child’s face—small moments of attention and awareness of the present. For a more profound experience, we will contemplate an everyday object such as a table. What is the suchness of a table? Dive in and discover the universe present in everything. Integrating mindfulness into your everyday life can be achieved through easy yet meaningful actions like taking a moment to admire a breathtaking sunset,

Reveling in the soothing aroma of a gentle drizzle,

Or cherishing the warm smile of a child.

These instances offer fleeting but powerful opportunities to pause and fully immerse yourself in the present moment.

Hello and welcome,

My name is Kristen Simons and I am so grateful to be joining you here today as we take a few moments to discuss suchness.

It's incredible how even the simplest thing,

Like a table,

Can hold so much meaning.

Have you ever stopped to think about the suchness of a table?

Considering all the different factors that went into its creation and how it ended up in your space,

You can truly appreciate its value and significance.

Let us take a moment and think about what goes into the making of a table.

Each element plays a crucial role,

From the people who worked hard to move it to the source of the wood itself.

We must also think about the workers who cut down the trees,

The conditions they worked in,

And the animals that called the trees home and how they were impacted by the process.

Let us remember the soil,

Air,

Rain,

And sunlight that all contributed to the growth of the trees.

Lastly,

We should think about the seed that started it all and the soil quality it was planted in.

Each aspect is important and deserves our attention and empathy.

When examining the creation of the screws and nails,

It's essential to consider the extensive involvement of numerous factors over vast periods of time.

Creating these vital components is truly a remarkable feat.

From the labor of countless individuals to the various ores,

Rocks,

And geological processes,

A complex and intricate chain of events occurred throughout myriad eons,

All leading to the production of these crucial elements.

Such a detailed and complicated process is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of humanity,

As well as the incredible power of the natural world.

So a table holds a greater significance than just being a piece of furniture.

It symbolizes the vastness of the universe and its interconnectedness with our lives.

Recognizing this can help us appreciate the blessings of nature and our place within it.

Let us now meditate on the suchness of a table.

During this meditation,

I will guide you through a visualization of suchness,

Allowing deeper appreciation for the miracles occurring around us in every moment.

Find a comfortable posture,

Whatever feels right for you in this moment.

Allow your hands to rest at your sides or in your lap,

And gently float your eyes closed.

Allow your awareness to settle on your breath.

Do not change your breath,

Only follow its natural rhythm.

Let us now contemplate the suchness of a table.

Think of a wooden table in your living space,

Or visualize any wooden table if you do not have one.

Visualize its texture,

Color,

And dimensions.

Hold a view of this table in your mind's eye.

Does it have drawers?

Are there screws or nails or perhaps only wood allowing the table to have form?

Now that we have formally established the vision of a table,

We will move backwards through space and time to understand its suchness.

Let us first contemplate the store where the table was purchased and the person who sold it.

Think about how it was delivered to the store,

The people involved with the transportation,

The fuel needed,

The miles driven,

And the country crossed.

A chain of actions and beings not often thought about.

Interconnectedness.

Gently shift your awareness to the manufacturing of the table.

The laborers,

Designers,

Other staff,

Energy,

Electricity,

And water that are involved in the manufacturing of a table.

Whether assembled in a factory or by hand,

This process required a flow of imagination and dedicated action from many different human beings.

Each with their unique story and path.

Contemplate the people who transported the lumber to the manufacturing plant.

The long hours behind the wheel of a semi watching the road miles flow past.

Or perhaps the wood arrived by rail,

Having a tour of the country over rolling hills,

Through valleys and plains,

Passing a myriad of dwellings.

Within each,

A beautiful,

Unique tapestry of life.

Now we will journey to the forest from which the lumber originated.

The loggers,

The forest,

The animals that called the tree home,

The soil,

The air,

The rain,

And the sunlight.

Contemplate the seed that finds its way to fertile soil,

And from whence and where it came.

Visualize the screws or nails,

The people,

The ore,

The rocks,

The eons of geologic deposits and activity for us to have.

Nails,

Screws,

Nuts,

And bolts.

You see,

It is not just a table but an embodiment of the universe.

Rest here for a few minutes,

Allowing the concept of suchness to permeate your being and allow you to glimpse into the interconnectedness of being.

Now gently begin to deepen your breath,

Allowing your attention to rest on your body.

You may bring small movements to your fingers and toes.

When you are ready,

You may open your eyes.

As you go about your day,

Bring awareness to what you encounter.

When mindful of suchness,

We have a deeper appreciation for the blessings and interconnectedness of our lives as part of nature.

As always,

I am ever grateful to have met you on the path.

Namaste.
