Welcome and I invite you to arrive in this moment as we discuss neuropathic symptoms and breaking the fear symptom and sensation cycle that can occur.
So just before we begin.
I'd just like to invite you that there's no pressure,
Nothing you need to do,
There's no performance.
I just invite you to be present.
Suggesting maybe that you take a slow breath.
Inhaling through the nose.
And exhaling through your mouth.
Nothing's needed of you and nothing's wanted of you.
Inhaling through your nose and exhaling through the mouth.
Maybe consider allowing your shoulders to soften.
Your hands to rest wherever they naturally fall.
Allow your body to be supported by whatever is holding you.
Maybe it's a chair.
A bed.
Floor or yoga mat.
Just allow yourself to be.
My name is Kim.
I'm a psychotherapist specializing in nervous system regulation,
Neuroplastic symptoms and sensations and conditions.
Trauma-informed care.
And I work through a lens of self-compassion based approaches.
For those of us who experience big bodily sensations,
Chronic symptoms and overprotective nervous system.
My work is grounded in self-compassion,
Kindness,
Education,
Clarity and the fundamental belief that our nervous system is doing its best.
A from when?
Our body and our mind feels completely overwhelmed.
So through this series I'm offering an introduction to neuroplastic conditions and symptoms and sensations.
We're exploring what neuroplastic conditions are,
Why the sensations feel so big,
How the nervous system becomes overprotective and how self-compassion can begin to soften these patterns.
And today we're focusing on how fear can keep those neuroplastic patterns and symptoms and sensations going.
I aim that each episode includes a neurodiverse friendly practice.
A somatic practice to help your body feel safe enough to settle.
And as I've just said,
There's nothing to get right.
You don't need to strive or push or perform.
I invite you to allow the space that we're creating together to be a place where you can feel held,
Where the tone is gentle and the softness is the right pace for you.
But before we begin,
Just a little note.
I am not a medical doctor.
I'm a psychotherapist.
And this series is for education,
To give an understanding and to give some support.
It isn't a substitute for a medical assessment.
It's not a diagnosis or treatment.
If you have symptoms that concern you,
It really is important to seek the opinion of a qualified medical doctor.
There's no pressure from me,
But there are other resources on Insect Timer that I've created.
If you wish to have a look at them,
They're all there to act as support for you.
And now.
Very,
Very gently.
Let's find out what neuroplastic conditions or symptoms are.
Just to remind ourselves a neuroplastic condition is a real lived experience.
It's a real sensation which is created by an overwhelmed or an overprotective nervous system.
This is when the brain starts interpreting normal sensations and signals as potential danger.
And the sensations can feel like pain,
Fatigue,
Dizziness.
Has an effect on our gut that can be sensory overwhelmed.
But this is not coming from a structural cause.
These are all ruled out.
The medical reasons are ruled out before we can begin to think that we have neuroplastic symptoms or conditions.
But these symptoms are not imagined,
They're very real and they're not all in your head.
They are physical,
Genuine signals produced by a sensitized nervous system which is trying to protect you.
It's on high alert.
So a neuroplastic symptom or condition in its simplest form means your nervous system has learned patterns of high alert.
And through the work that I aim to do.
Is to support you to find self-compassion,
Kindness,
A sense of safety through gentle practice.
So you may be asking yourselves,
Why?
Am I discussing fear and why and how can fear keep symptoms such as chronic pain,
Chronic fatigue,
Dizziness,
Migraines or other neuroplastic conditions?
Why can't fear keep these symptoms persistent?
Because it becomes a cycle.
A sensation can be read.
As being a threat to our system.
Fear arises,
High alert happens,
Our bodies tighten and they get ready to fight or flee or they go into a shut down,
Freeze,
Depressive state.
And those symptoms can get stronger and stronger.
The fear exacerbates and the symptom perpetuates.
It can feel confusing,
Frustrating and never-ending.
I know I have been there.
But there is this factor.
If we understand how fear can create this loop or affect this loop,
It can be a really powerful way of helping us support our nervous system by interrupting this fear symptom cycle.
So when a sensation in the body shows up,
One of the most important things our brain scans for is to assess for danger.
It asks itself,
Is this sensation safe?
Or is it a threat?
The brain can lean towards threat even slightly and the nervous system shifts into a protection mode.
That protection mode can look like the symptoms I've talked about.
It can feel like worry,
Anxiety.
We might continually scan our body for the sensations,
The pain,
The fatigue.
We might try to.
Fix or control the sensations or the symptoms.
We might avoid movements or activities.
And we get more and more frustrated,
More and more fearful,
Fighting with the symptoms.
Now all these reactions are absolutely human.
But when they become in a chronic,
Continued way,
The fear keeps these symptoms going,
It's a complete loop.
But your brain is trying to keep you safe.
And here's the tricky part the more your brain protects you from the perceived threat,
The perceived danger.
The louder and the more intense the sensations and symptoms can become.
Over time the symptom becomes Like this,
The cycle starts with a sensation.
It can become felt like a significant symptom of pain,
A migraine,
Gut problems.
So that symptom becomes more regular.
We're feeding it through the heightened attention of the nervous system,
Through worry,
Anxiety.
We have more sensitivity because our threat response in our nervous system is on high alert,
In turn leading to more symptoms,
More fear,
More sensations.
Symptoms persist and can even get bigger or more intense.
This pattern.
Can happen.
Not because our bodies are broken but because our brains have learned a pattern an overprotective pattern.
And when I use the word fear,
Many people that I've have talked to don't recognize the word fear because fear isn't always dramatic.
Sometimes it's just that thought.
Sensation.
Such as just being over careful.
Or we can over anticipate.
What happens if something happens again?
What happens if my pain arises when I'm.
.
.
Jogging when I'm running.
Or we can catastrophise.
What happens if this gets worse when I'm out?
Trying to fix our mind can be constantly checking or researching or adjusting.
We can become hyper-focused.
Monitoring each and every sensation we have.
And the words in our mind,
The narrative in our mind,
I can't cope with this,
This is too much.
And I'd suggest that all of these are forms of fear.
But none of them are your fault.
They are learned,
Protective responses.
It becomes a narrative within us.
So the first thing I would suggest is awareness.
The first step out of this cycle of fear,
Increase symptoms and anxiety.
Begin to be aware of noticing patterns.
You pause.
And you breathe.
And you notice what's going on in your body and in your mind.
So as soon as you notice something you stop You're pausing.
You breathe more deeply and you become aware.
You become an observer.
Rather than part of the reaction,
You're observing what's happening in your body.
You move from being inside the fear loop,
To observing the fear,
To observing the sensation.
And maybe you could name what's happening.
Maybe you name it as a prediction that this sensation means I can't do something.
Maybe you could name that this is my brain trying to protect me.
Or even name that this is the fear symptom cycle.
Awareness interrupts the automatic loop.
It creates space,
It softens the urgency and that space,
That awareness and the pausing and the breathing,
That space is where change begins.
You are becoming the witness.
You are becoming the observer.
So just hold that for a while,
Just allow that to be something that settles within you.
Awareness is the first step out of the cycle of these neuroplastic symptoms.
With curiosity,
You notice.
You notice the pattern.
You are beginning to pause,
To breathe.
To witness,
To allow.
And maybe you go further and say to yourself that this is my brain trying to protect me.
You may even say this is the fear symptom mood.
Which creates space.
Awareness is interrupting that automatic loop and that space is helping you create change,
Genuine neuroplastic change.
Just a reminder that there is a kinder,
More self-compassionate way forward.
Rather than berating yourself or getting caught up in catastrophizing.
Remind yourself that the symptoms that you're experiencing are real.
Your body is not broken.
Your brain is trying to protect you.
And if these responses can be learned,
They can be unlearned.
And this protective loop,
This fear cycle,
Can be retrained through neuroplasticity.
You are not stuck.
You are not failing.
You are learning.
And your nervous system,
Through repetition,
Can learn new patterns,
One gentle moment of awareness at a time.
One pause.
One breath.
One observation as you as the observer.
One moment at a time.
Repeating this again and again.
So you could begin to take control gently and slowly.
Supporting your nervous system to read cues of safety.
Thank you for being here with me.
Inhaling,
Take a beautiful slow deep breath through the nose.
Exhale and release through the mouth.
Inhaling through your nose,
Exhale through the mouth.
Allow yourself to feel even more supported by whatever is holding you.
Allow the new information to settle through you.
And I thank you for meeting this practice and this idea.
These theories with softness,
With openness,
With curiosity and courage,
Even if it doesn't feel like courage,
Because understanding these neuroplastic symptoms is difficult work.
And simply showing up for yourself in this way is meaningful.
And each time you begin Become aware.
Each time you pause and breathe and become the witness of the sensation,
That begins to make meaningful change.
And the more that you become aware and make these changes.
The more effected the network of neuroplasticity will come for you.
So once again,
To validate you,
Your sensations are real.
Your neuroplastic symptoms,
That experience is valid.
And your nervous system is doing its best.
You don't need to get any of this perfect.
You don't need to rush or push.
You don't need to perform.
I'm inviting you to meet yourself with self-compassion and with kindness,
With awareness.
Pause,
Breathe and witness.
But just a gentleman reminder before we close.
I'm not a medical doctor.
I am a psychotherapist.
And this recording is for education and understanding.
This is not a substitute for medical assessment.
This is not a diagnosis or treatment If you have symptoms that concern you,
Please seek the opinion of a qualified medical doctor.
Thank you for listening.
Thank you for your courage of being here and witnessing these ideas.
Thank you for allowing me to accompany you.
Self-compassion,
Kindness and safety reshape our nervous systems.
