Hi and welcome to this chat on connecting daily with the four elements and why we do that or why I do that.
My name is Jenny C.
Bell.
I am the author of Spirit Crystals Discover Your Crystal Guide for Healing and Empowerment which is both a book and an audiobook and the author of Divergent Witchcraft an inclusive approach to making magic which comes out in June of 2026.
I am also the host of the Cozy Coven Chats podcast where every week I chat about just living the witchy life and how to do that simply and I'm also the host of the Our Coven community and in this chat I want to talk about how my practice has evolved to calling in elements daily because originally when I first started out I only called them in as a ritual circle of protection before spells or rituals or you know ceremonies things like that.
So I'm going to take you back to the 90s and I was uh when I first began I was I would have called myself Wiccan.
I was very much into the whole Wiccan movement um you know that's mainly a lot of the books that were available too you know this is pre-internet I mean the internet was around but pre-everybody else knowing about it using it and so it's kind of limited to what Borders books had in the mall what my friends had that I could borrow and then you know when I lived um well there was different metaphysical shops here and there but you know it was really kind of what was available.
So I started off as a Wiccan and in the Wiccan movement you know a lot of what we associate with modern witchcraft comes from Wicca like the sabbats,
The sabbats and you know these kind of calling on the elements.
Now of course that's older than Wicca but I would say Wicca really brought it to the mainstream because Wicca was very much like this idea of like let's take old things the ancestors did,
Let's take folk magic,
Let's take things of indigenous cultures and let's blend it into a modern religion for modern witches and some people find fault with that but I feel like it's really helped push witchcraft to where it is now and definitely there are some issues with it but you know it is what it is.
I no longer identify as a Wiccan but that's how I began and so in Wicca the idea is that you connect to the four elements and you ask them to watch over you for spiritual protection during rituals and ceremonies but really only then and I don't do that anymore.
I do that on a daily basis and then I moved into paganism and was part of a pagan group and learned how people also kind of associated different beings with the four corners or four elements.
I learned about elementals which are like beings connected to the elements.
There's you know there's a lot more in depth and then I studied lots of things.
Studied Buddhism,
I studied with Kyle Gray the angel whisperer and I learned about the angels that are associated with the elements.
I also studied as a Reiki and I became a Reiki master and then I also studied with the Four Winds Society and took shamanism courses with Alberto Vildo and so I'm not saying all this that you need to do all that.
I'm just saying that that's what I've seen over the years through all these different studies and all these different you know methods of calling on the quarters is really they're all kind of similar and lots of spirituality,
Lots of religion talks about the four corners,
The four winds,
The four elements,
You know the four directions.
It's so common that it's kind of beautiful really.
Like I love when there's just this common thread through all these different paths and it makes me feel like there's deep truth in it when so many paths come to the same conclusion.
So let's briefly talk about that.
So you have the four directions and in what I learned in Wicca was that we started by calling in those four directions or those four elements either in the north or the east and that was just like what I learned.
It was like okay so you had your choice.
You could either be like a call on the elements and the elements of the earth north first or a call on the elements and the elements of the first.
But then when I studied shamanism because the shaman I was studying under is from South America he wanted to always call from the south and then you end in the east.
So you know I want to start there that you can choose which direction or which element to call on first that feels comfortable to you like whatever feels right to you.
So you have you know a lot of Wiccans and Pagans either call on the element of earth or air first but then you have shamans calling on south or fire first.
Let me give you an example.
Let me give you a little background in case I don't want to lose you.
So I'm first going to read you the elemental prayer from spirit crystals.
So this is how to call the quarters using the spirit crystals.
I call upon the elementals and the elements of the south.
Great praseolite green and bright help me discover the sage within.
I call upon the elementals and the elements of the west.
Mysterious smoky courts connect me to the rainbow bridge.
I call upon the elementals and the elements of the north.
Soft rose courts open my heart and help me receive.
I call upon the elementals and the elements of the east.
Clear courts give me the clarity to see beyond.
I call to the mother earth beneath me strong and deep.
Citrine root me in the great mother so that I may never be alone.
I call to the cosmos above me vast and wide.
Purple amethyst open me to connect to the galactic wisdom and so it is.
And so we're going to talk a little bit about this kind of prayer and how to create your own.
That's the little freebie that's included with my chat is a basically a worksheet on how to do this yourself.
So let's take each element by itself and just talk about it.
So south I connect praseolite or venturine which is a green quartz with the south and that just felt right to me.
This was a very intuitively written book.
The other things connected with the south are archangel Michael because he's got that big fiery sword.
The element of fire right and then in the shamanism I learned it's the snake or satchamama,
The great serpent.
And so there are lots of other things that are connected with the south and there's lots of things.
So if we're talking about fire and you're like okay so fire what what do you associate with fire and that's how you would decide are you going to bring in a watcher or guardian or a guide or are you going to just talk try to connect with the elemental like a salamander right fire or are you just going to try to really embody fire maybe bring a candle into your practice or you know light a match what feels right to you.
So south is fire.
Now let's talk about the next one which is west right.
West I have smoky quartz as the connection to the element of west or to the element of water and it's archangel Gabriel for those that work with angels the element of west or water.
Some people will flip Gabriel and feel so definitely do what feels right but it's often archangel Gabriel in the west and in shamanism it's the jaguar,
Mother-sister jaguar.
And so west is water.
So what do you personally associate with water?
Is it undines or mermaids?
Is it just the element of water?
Do you want to bring in a cup of water to your practice?
Like what do you associate with water?
Do you work with like a river spirit?
Do you work with a an ocean deity?
You can bring in a seashell right.
There's so much you can do with that and then we move to the east and actually we move to sorry we move to the north and for me that's rose quartz.
That's the element of earth and that would be archangel Uriel and that would be anything or anyone you connect with earth right like gnomes and any kind of earthly thing like sand.
You could bring in a stone that you found.
You could bring in a little cup of dirt,
A plant right.
I think earth is one of the easiest elements to connect with.
Could be an earth deity.
It could be mother earth right.
In shamanism the north is associated with the hummingbird as the spirit and then next and last we go to east when that's archangel Raphael but like I said some people flip Raphael and Gabriel partly because Gabriel has the trumpet and that's like very air sign right and so Raphael is associated with east.
That's air.
We have for me clear quartz is associated with air and shamanism it's the great eagle or the condor.
There's birds and feathers and fairies and you know incense and smoke.
There's so much that you can connect to air so you have these four directions.
Each are associated with four elements and those are pretty common throughout a lot of spiritual practices.
That's the same element connected with the same direction but definitely do what feels right to you and then you have this choice.
Do I want to start by calling in everybody from the north like you know the compass like that feels right to me?
Do I want to start by calling everybody in from the east?
Do I want to start by calling everybody in from the south?
And the reason why I've gone to working with the south is because you end in the east and I like to face the east while doing prayers so for me it made sense to start in the south and then end up where I want to be but some people I said like I said they kind of like to do their own thing.
So your first thing that you're thinking about calling in quarters is okay so here's the four directions,
Here's the four elements,
Here's all the different things that can be associated with these elements and then once you figure out kind of like what your vibe is you want them to be equal so like you don't want to call in an angel for one of the elements and then an elemental being for a different element like you want them to all kind of go together right and then you want to decide what direction you want to start in and if you're like you know I just I don't know like I don't know what elements connection to elements I want to make just calling on the elementals is enough and that just means any kind of land spirit or being near you that is connected to that element can come watch over you.
You can also use the old watchers of the watchtowers right that's an old one that I haven't heard in a long time but I think it's in the movie The Craft but you can call in you know I call them the watchers of the watchtowers of the north so that'll be all the beings that are associated with that.
All right so it depends you know I know I'm talking to a lot of people different backgrounds like some of you are pagan you have quite the pantheon you work with some of you may be secular and only work you know no deities and then that's in the when you call on the elements.
Now why do we do it?
We do it because when we want to have a circle protection we want someone there to guard it and guide it that is not our own energy.
So yes of course you can make a circle protection from your own energy but then who's being drained during that process?
You.
So instead if you call on the elements and beings associated or energy associated with the elements you're asking an outside source to protect you that's not you so you're not being drained and you know how do you reciprocate that?
You thank them,
You can leave little offerings like a little cup of water for water,
A little incense or a little moment of incense for you know for air.
It doesn't have to be really complicated and so originally I would do these elemental prayers ritual circle for only for ritual circles but then when I studied shamanism I started practicing calling in the elements every day and I loved that for lots of reasons.
So one of the things I noticed is because I call on the elementals and the of the elements and I also call on the land spirits is that my yard took off.
I had taken out all of my grass and I had created like a yard in and after working on this kind of call suddenly all my plants were flourishing and plants were being brought in by birds or deer or squirrels that I wanted.
I had nettle growing that I wanted I would have planted myself.
I had pink yarrow when I only planted white.
It was just like things that were just happening so I feel like it was very a good way to connect with the land and healing for myself on the land.
So that was one of the things.
Another thing that I noticed was that I felt more energy throughout the day.
I had always done you know just a protective circle around myself and envisioned you know this protective circle but suddenly I felt like really protected to move throughout the day and I felt a deep connection too to the elements and I actually recently had a psychic reading and the person said oh I see there's lots of elementals with you.
I was like oh yes because you know I've been really connecting and making an effort to work with them and so I think there's lots of benefits to calling in.
If you're new to witchcraft,
One of the greatest benefits to calling on the elements every day is that you're going to really forge a relationship and even if you decide after you know maybe 30 to 90 days of doing this that I don't want to call on them every day.
I only want to call them in for ritual circle.
Well you now have a relationship and chances are you'll memorize the prayer that you say as well so you don't have to write it down anymore and so there's lots of benefits to kind of this daily calling of the elements.
I also think you know we are all the elements and so when we call on them we strengthen our connection to them and we feel like yeah this is who we are.
This is you know I am the elements because remember as humans we're the four elements plus the fifth which is spirit and that's what the pentacle or the pentagram you know really is.
It's the the five elements and at the top is spirit and that's you.
You make it the fifth so it's really been helpful to me.
I'm going to read you my prayer one more time and you'll notice that I also after I call on the four elements,
I also call on mother earth and then I call on the universe and that's just something I've added probably because you know I do have some background in some new age studying and so I really liked the idea of calling on both.
So we'll hear this some more time and then thank you so much for listening and please connect with me.
