Hello beautiful souls,
This is JB and welcome to a beautiful night's sleep.
Thanks for being here for another in the series sleep stories with Junbi.
Join me as I'm going to take a fishing trip with my brother and see if I'll be able to catch a fish for my tea.
So let's get into your favorite sleeping position.
Make sure you're comfortable,
Close your eyes and slowly imagine yourself just melting into the bed.
Now let's go to your breathing,
Slowing down the heart rate and let's take some nourishing breaths together.
Breathe in,
Breathe out,
Breathe in,
Breathe out,
Breathe in,
Breathe out,
Breathe in,
Breathe Breathe out.
Last time,
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
So thanks for joining me on my little fishing trip.
I'm here with my brother who is always telling me how relaxing and fun fishing is.
I see it as just sitting there with a fishing rod.
Well,
I suppose we're just two totally different people.
It is relaxing to me though because I love to hear the water slapping against the boat.
So let's get into the boat and go out to our favourite fishing spot.
Wow,
That engine sounds loud.
Feeling all the wind blowing on my face.
It's a beautiful feeling.
Chopping through the water and bouncing off the waves.
Hope it doesn't scare all the fish away.
Nice sounds.
Oh my,
There's another boat.
Lots of boats today.
Everybody having the same idea as us.
We are setting some things up.
Nets and lines and all the things I know nothing about.
Basically,
I'll let the professionals get on with it.
Firstly,
We have to throw some bait into the water.
And I'm going to throw some in too.
Oh my,
Look at the little nippers jumping up and down for the bait.
So now,
I've been told we throw out our line and get it ready and in place.
Ooh,
That sound is distinctive and cannot be mistaken for anything else.
Now my brother has to show me how to throw my line out.
Oh,
Okay,
Here it is.
Got it.
So the fish are still jumping away in the water.
So now all we have to do is wait for a bite and then we can take home some wonderful fresh fish for my tea.
My brother kept telling me how great it was to go fishing and I'm someone who's willing to give most things a try.
So it's really nice to try it out with a professional like him.
Don't let him hear me say that.
I'll never hear the end of it.
I could imagine he would say,
Oh yes Jay,
That's his nickname for me.
I'm a professional fisherman.
So look and learn.
Well that's what I'm doing today.
I have spent some time in the Caribbean and out there they have a bustling fishing industry.
As is the case for all Caribbean islands,
Fishing is associated with activities that have been integral components of the cultural,
Social and economic fabric for many years.
During the first half of the century there were small open sailboats used for fishing.
The vessels were extremely difficult to steer and had to be manned by a crew of at least three and could only reach a maximum speed of just over four miles per hour.
The boats carried no ice on board to preserve the catch and the time between taking the fish on board and returning to shore to sell them was limited.
The difficulty in manoeuvring and the slow speed of the vessel reduced the fishing range so that the length of the fishing day ranged between 10 to 14 hours.
With only four to eight hours spent in actual fishing and the remainder spent in setting up and travelling.
The sailboats could carry an estimated maximum quantity of around two to four thousand pounds of fish.
Then a significant development in the fishing fleet was the introduction of an on board ice hold.
These boats are commonly now referred to in the Caribbean as ice boats.
The increased efficiency of the ice boat is a product of the ability to stay at sea fishing for longer periods,
Up to around two weeks.
And to fish further from land in areas of potentially higher fish numbers without fear of the catch spoiling.
They take out the ice boats for days or weeks on end and trawl the sea for the delicacies that lay just below the surface.
Well I'm here with my brother and all we want is to get a few fish for my tea so we wait.
Looks like there are some other boats coming,
Ooh they're passing.
Ah there's another boat passing,
Looks like they will be having a great time.
I imagine that trip is a little more about drinking and partying than fishing.
You know everybody enjoys life their own way.
Now we get a net,
Scoop up the fish and pop them onto the boat.
Voila!
It's been a great day today.
Can't wait to get home and have a real fish dinner,
Probably with some chips.
I love me some fish and chips.
Thanks for coming on the boat with me.
As the boat is gently bobbing on the water,
I'm getting a little sleepy now and I'm sure you are too.
So as you slowly drift away,
Have yourself a great night's sleep and see you next time for another in the series,
Sleep Stories with June B.
Bye!
