Experience freedom from your mind tonight,
As you're shown how to stop overthinking and to start simply being.
Whatever's been moving through you lately,
Be that anxiety,
Rumination,
Or simply cluttered thoughts,
It's okay to let it rest now,
It's okay to take a break from it all.
My name is Jason Stevenson,
And I'm honoured that you've chosen to join me here tonight.
Let this practice be your refuge as you slowly drift off to sleep.
Soon,
I'll guide you to find peace in the quiet refrains of nature,
Next to a tranquil pond,
Beneath sheltering cherry blossoms.
But there's no need to force peace to come,
Trust that it's on its way,
And that you're already being guided there.
So,
As you settle into your sleep space,
Begin by taking a few slow,
Deep breaths.
Let your body expand gently and without force as you inhale,
Releasing a sigh as you exhale.
And another slow,
Expansive breath in,
And a slow,
Complete release.
Take one more full,
Deep breath,
And then continue to breathe naturally,
Slowly,
Surrendering to the effortless ebb and flow of each cycle.
Now,
Draw your attention to the crown of your head,
And notice if there's any tension or lightness woven into this area.
You might notice it in your forehead,
Or around your temples,
But regardless,
Imagine a slow wave of relaxation flowing through the cells and muscles there.
Allow it to gently massage any knots of tension,
Stress,
Or worry.
If you'd like,
You might even take a few breaths to bring your hands up to your forehead,
And to gently massage these areas yourself.
Do whatever you need to do to help these muscles relax.
Now,
Let your hands and arms rest back down when that feels complete,
And then scan the rest of your face and head,
Guiding any stress or contraction to untangle,
Your jaw unclenches,
And maybe your lips part gently.
As your whole face begins to soften,
Allow whatever does not serve your head or thinking mind to melt into your pillow,
Then into the earth below.
Now,
Scan the sides of your neck,
Running down and across your shoulders,
And as you bear witness to these muscles,
Invite them to soften,
Encourage them to release any baggage they don't need to carry tonight,
And after any heavy weight is laid aside,
Let your attention flow gently down your arms,
Bestowing your upper arms with full permission to relax,
To become soft and heavy,
Sensing into your elbows with care and kindness,
Inviting them to soften,
And offering now ease and relaxation to every cell and muscle in your forearms,
Melting into the mattress that holds them,
Then passing gently through your wrists and into your hands,
Offering a sense of ease and spaciousness to your palms and fingers,
Allow your hands to loosen,
To soften their grip on things,
Take one or two breaths while granting your arms your full undivided attention,
And let them melt a little more as you exhale,
Then let your attention travel into your chest and heart,
Sensing the gentle movement of the breath passing through here,
Notice how you don't need to force your breath to move,
You can surrender to the way it naturally,
Gracefully and effortlessly supports you,
And as you breathe,
Notice a very faint but sweet floral scent moving through you,
Something akin to rose,
Vanilla and almond,
This fragrance will continue to flow within and around you,
But you let your attention descend now,
And with ease and grace,
It travels the length of your spine until it lands gently in your belly and pelvis,
As you breathe,
Allow your lower abdomen to rise and fall gently,
And any pattern of holding or contracting in these areas begins to unravel,
Not with force,
But with ease,
Sense into your tailbone,
Into the root of your spine,
For a couple of breaths now,
And imagine it anchoring you to the earth below,
Grounding and supporting you steadily,
Then inch by inch,
Your attention travels like a slow moving stream down your legs,
Guiding your quads and hamstrings to melt,
Your knees to become soft and relaxed,
Your calves to surrender into stillness,
And your ankles to be held and soothed,
And finally,
Your attention pulls in your feet as you sense into your soles,
Your heels,
The arches of your feet,
And your toes,
And give your feet permission to rest deeply now,
Rooting as your tailbone did into the mattress beneath you,
Feel how relaxed and heavy your legs are,
Releasing any desire or urge to go anywhere,
To do anything,
And take a few slow breaths to sense into your whole body,
Feeling its connection to the bed beneath you,
The textiles wrapped around you,
And the pillow beneath your head,
And anchor in the sweet simplicity of being held here,
Just as you are,
As deepening layers of peace prepare to emerge,
Now reconnect with the breath moving through you,
And with the subtle floral aroma it carries,
And imagine this fragrance,
A blend of rose,
Vanilla,
And almond,
Travelling up to the crown of your head,
Offering lightness and spaciousness,
Then all the way down to your toes,
Anchoring you to the sustenance of the soil,
And follow the scent as it carries you between worlds,
As it leads you to a quiet meadow,
And the edge of a pristine pond,
Cherry trees are in full bloom,
With cloud-like clusters of white and pale pink blossoms,
And soft golden light fills the warm late afternoon air,
Take a moment to anchor the soles of your feet here,
Notice what the ground feels like,
Perhaps feeling the warm grass against bare skin,
And notice what the air feels like as it brushes gently past you,
And as it fills your lungs with that floral vanilla perfume,
And as you ground yourself here,
Take a slow,
Expansive breath in,
And slow,
Deep release,
Another slow,
Expansive inhale,
And slow,
Gently exhale,
Breathe naturally now as you absorb this world through all of your senses more deeply,
And notice the soft rustle of petals in the trees overhead,
And the faint trickle of water where a small stream enters the pond,
And on the other side where it slowly exits,
Feel the gentle warmth of the afternoon sun on your skin,
And of the comfortable clothing wrapped around your body,
Watch a dragonfly skimming the water's surface,
And the way dappled patterns of light cover the earth in the shade of full canopies,
And observe what it feels like in your body to be here,
Perhaps a sense of balance,
Of support and connection,
Or maybe a gentle untangling,
You might feel lingering tension melting into the soil holding you,
And now you notice that next to the pond is a blanket,
With cushions and additional blankets stacked atop it for comfort,
This is your sanctuary within the sanctuary,
A place where you can cease all striving,
Where you can stop planning and ruminating,
And where you can learn to simply be,
So go ahead and make yourself comfortable there,
Coming to a seated position on a cushion with a blanket stretched over your lap,
You might also imagine that a cherry tree stands behind you,
And that you let your back rest on its strong,
Supportive trunk,
As you settle in,
You gaze across the water,
Its smooth surface perfectly mirrors the world around it,
Tall flowering trees,
And a pale blue sky with just a few white clouds floating through,
The water is still,
The meadow is still,
And you're beginning to see that the nature here is reflecting the stillness that's possible within you too,
So take a few more moments to attune to the peace of this quiet place,
Feel the breath moving into and out of your body,
Weaving you seamlessly into the natural world,
And as you sit,
Something beautiful unfolds,
Slowly and gently,
Petals begin to drift from the tree,
One by one,
They depart their branches,
Floating gently down through space,
Before landing quietly,
Gracefully on the water,
Watch this scene unfold,
While keeping it spacious,
It's not hundreds of petals beginning to drift,
Just a few,
They move like tiny dancers,
Twirling as they float,
Catching the golden light of the late day sun,
While you observe this magic unfolding,
Know that it's natural for thoughts to arise,
It's in the mind's nature to wander,
Sometimes into fear and worry,
Sometimes just into planning or rumination,
But the invitation here is to find the peace beneath the chatter,
To stop overthinking and to practice simply being,
So as thoughts arise,
Imagine placing each one into a falling petal,
Then allow it to float down the water and to drift gently across the surface,
The water isn't hurried,
It patiently holds and bears witness to whatever thoughts it's receiving,
But sooner rather than later,
An invisible current carries that petal,
And the thought it holds to the edge of the pond,
You might sense a very subtle breeze moving through the air as this happens,
As it reaches the far side of the pond,
A narrow stream guides it away,
Disappearing from sight completely,
So take your time to observe this natural flow of nature,
Watching the thoughts as they come and gently allowing them to go,
You're not pushing your thoughts away,
You're not making the floating petals move faster,
You're trusting the current of nature to move things organically,
This is a practice of presence,
Neither clinging onto your thoughts nor avoiding or resisting them,
Continue to watch what's moving within you with care and patience,
In between each thought,
In between each falling petal,
The surface of the water is completely still,
This is how your mind is too,
Beneath the noise of worry,
Rumination,
Controlling and planning,
There is a deep unshakable peace,
There is pure awareness,
Pure presence,
When we realise this,
We realise that we don't stop our racing thoughts by forcing them to go away,
Endless inner chatter ceases when we're able to step back and observe how things move,
When we stop resisting and stop clinging,
This awareness is what reveals our underlying stillness,
Our underlying inner peace,
Allow the present moment to unfold organically now,
Paying attention to the various sounds,
Subtle movements and life forms in the meadow,
You might marvel for a while at the way the quality of light in the air is beginning to shift,
The sun has just dipped behind the horizon,
Offering an amber glow to the sky and earth,
You might also deepen your connection to the ground beneath your bottom or the tree supporting your back,
Allow your whole body to melt into this physical support system,
Knowing that nature is holding you without condition,
There's no one you need to be and nothing you need to prove,
So gently surrender any of these inclinations if they're still lingering,
Letting go of the need to fix,
Accomplish or earn your right to simply exist,
You can soften into this moment to breathe without expectation,
To rest without justification,
You are enough,
This moment as it stands is enough,
If or when the mind wanders,
You can continue to let your thoughts flow by linking them to the falling petals,
Watching them land on the water and be carried away,
Or you might use gentle affirmations to return to presence,
Silently repeating,
I am here with my breath,
I am here in this moment,
I am here with my breath,
I am here in this moment,
You might feel yourself growing increasingly tired as you rest in the peace of the meadow,
And you are welcome to drift off to sleep at any time,
To support that transition,
Envision yourself coming to lie down beside the pond,
Sheltered by blooming cherry trees,
Take your time to settle in,
Head melting into supportive cushions,
And seeing yourself pull a cozy blanket up over your body,
You tuck yourself in with care,
And feel the support of the earth beneath you,
Anchoring both mind and body to the quiet pulse of nature,
And notice the way gravity gently but firmly holds you here,
Surrendering any lingering physical tension to that ever-present downward pull,
As you rest,
You gaze out at the world around you,
At the vibrant and delicate cherry blossoms,
At the stillness of the pond,
And at the vast sky beyond it,
Slowly,
It transmutes from blue to lavender,
With streaks of dark gold hovering above the horizon,
The day transitions to dusk,
Which will soon transition to night,
The meadow is moving towards sleep,
And so are you,
Give yourself permission to be carried there,
You are being carried to sleep,
Guided gently into slumber,
It's not something you can make happen through will or force,
It's something to melt into,
And so as you are led in that direction,
Feel yourself growing weightless,
Your mind releases any last baggage to petals floating down the pond,
And your body releases tension down to the soil beneath you,
And with ease and grace,
You are able to step outside the noise of your mind,
You have learned to watch thoughts come,
And to let them go,
Attuning to the peace and stillness that precedes them,
And so rest for a few quiet moments in the space between your thoughts,
This is the peace you seek,
And remember that it's not about pushing your thoughts away,
It's about reconnecting with the stillness,
The presence,
And the silent place beneath them,
It is always there.
If the mind wanders,
Soften any attachments or resistance to these thoughts,
It's ok,
It's ok that they come,
Allow them to move,
Calmly and gracefully,
Like slow moving water,
Then rest back into the grace and ease of simply being,
The sky is growing darker as night falls,
It's springtime,
But there's a lovely warmth in the air,
Evening birds chirp quietly as they too wind down,
And a gentle breeze brushes through the blossoms overhead,
Listen to the symphony of the space around you,
Sinking into its sweet lullaby,
And notice now that a full moon is rising,
Spilling brilliant silver light across the still meadow and quiet waters,
Awe,
Wonder,
And serenity blanket the world,
Inviting you to slip even deeper into presence,
Into the peaceful rhythm of nature,
Sense the way that even amidst the stillness,
You are being rocked to sleep,
Each ebb and flow of your breath cradles you,
Guiding you towards steep restorative slumber,
And now,
While knowing that the peaceful vibrations of this meadow and its tranquil pond are always,
Always within you,
You can allow the imagery to gently dissipate,
Sensing your body where it rests on the surface supporting you,
And now,
Deepen your attunement to the feeling of the pillow beneath your head,
Noticing how soft and supportive it is,
Noticing the texture of the linen that covers it,
And now,
Sense into the feeling of the mattress beneath you,
And the sheet that runs beneath your body,
Now notice what's pulled up over your body,
Be that a sheet,
Blanket,
Or duvet,
Feel the way it molds effortlessly to the shape of your body,
Savoring the warmth and comfort it provides,
Just as it was readily available in that meadow sanctuary,
Pure presence is always within reach here too,
At any moment,
You can attune to your body and to your senses to drop out of your thinking mind,
You can always look for the breathing room in between your thoughts,
So as you rest here,
In the safety and comfort of this space holding you,
We'll take one more journey through the body,
Inviting it to surrender to sleep now,
Begin by calling your attention to the crown of your head and forehead,
Sensing into the muscles there,
And into the thinking mind behind them,
Now,
Then silently whisper or simply allow the following words to permeate this place,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
Now,
Sense into your whole face now,
Repeating or just bathing in the same words,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
Drawing your attention to your neck and shoulders,
And again,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
Invite each area we move through to grow a little heavier,
Melting into the cocoon of your bed with ease,
And as your awareness flows from your shoulders to your fingertips,
The words move with it,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
Now,
Sense into the gentle rhythm of your breath as it moves through your heart and chest,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
And slowly travel the length of your spine,
Inviting your whole nervous system to rest deeply,
And when your awareness lands in your belly,
I surrender to sleep now,
Now,
I surrender to sleep,
Bearing compassionate witness to your hips,
Your tailbone,
And your pelvis,
And repeating or allowing the words to permeate,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
And inch by inch,
As you scan all the way down from your hips to your toes,
Gently reaffirming,
I surrender to sleep now,
I surrender to sleep,
And your whole body is relaxed,
Your mind is clear,
Calm,
And grounded,
And there is nothing left for you to do,
Nothing for you to imagine or focus on,
All that remains is the gentle transition into sleep that is just on the horizon,
And until it comes,
You can allow yourself to float through the music streaming through you,
And may the coming night bring you sweet dreams and deep,
Deep rest,
And until next time,
Goodnight my friend,
Goodnight.
