Most forms of mindfulness treat thoughts like a distraction. Instead of thoughts being a distraction, here we cultivate an open sky-like awareness with curiosity and acceptance, watching mindfully as thoughts come and go like clouds in the sky, or objects in a river of consciousness. A particular metaphor I’ve found helpful is treating each thought like a bubble in a pot of boiling water that’s born on the surface and then rises to the top before evaporating. This is how we break the "thought disease" of the human condition. This practice can be particularly freeing and empowering, as we learn to relate to thought more compassionately, skillfully, and wisely.
