Hi,
I'm Steve Walker,
A life and leadership coach and meditation teacher.
In the next few minutes,
I want to talk to you about your inner critic,
That voice inside your head that's telling you you're not enough,
You're not worthy.
And give you one simple practice that starts you on the path towards managing it a little bit better.
You know,
Our inner critic can feel like the enemy,
But it's not.
It's actually programming from when we were a kid that kind of outlived its utility.
The problem is that many of us spend a lot of time and energy fighting it or believing it and following it.
There's actually a third path which is to be the observer.
To observe it without giving it any power to control you or your future actions and thoughts.
So here's the practice and this is just a simple first step that will create some space between you and your inner critic because it's not the real you,
Right?
That's not your authentic self.
So here's what you do.
The next time your inner critic starts chirping at you,
Telling you you're not enough,
Beating yourself up for a mistake that you made,
Take a pause and name it.
Say,
Oh,
There's the inner critic again.
You can even give it a name.
Some people will call it Frank or Tom or Jane or Cranky Grandpa.
Whatever works for you.
But name it and then put your hand on your chest,
Which is good for soothing your nervous system.
And.
Take a couple of deep breaths.
And this creates the space,
Right?
Naming it.
Takes it into your prefrontal cortex,
Right,
And then calming yourself,
Calms your nervous system,
It helps shut down your amygdala,
Your fear center,
And now you can work with it.
Now you can decide what you want to do next instead of just blindly following the inner critic or fighting with it.
I hope this helps.
It's just a first step.
If this resonated with you,
I hope you'll follow me here on InsideTimer.
If you'd like to share what this brought up for you,
I'd love to hear about it.
Send me a DM.
And I look forward to seeing you in one of my live sessions weekly here on Insight Timer.
