A Meditation For Achieving Goals And Creating Habits

Accomplishing resolutions or goals, or establishing new habits, can be challenging. There is research, however, that suggests that attaching a positive emotion to the goal or habit can help convince your brain to want to achieve the goal or establish the habit. This meditation will help you do just that.

Achieving New Year's resolutions or goals or creating new habits can be quite challenging because our brains are actually wired to seek familiarity,

To seek consistency,

Because in our brains those things mean safety.

So we have to figure out a way to convince our brain that it wants something new,

Something different.

Well there's some research that suggests that if we can sit with a goal or a resolution or an intention or the idea of a new habit and think about the positive emotions that we're going to feel once we achieve the goal or accomplish the resolution or establish the new habit,

That our brain will in a way become addicted to that emotion.

It will want and crave that emotion and then it will make it easier for us to do the things that will be necessary to achieve the goal or establish the new habit.

So this meditation will help us think about a goal or a new habit and attach an emotion to it that hopefully the brain will crave in the future.

And every time you're thinking about doing something that would help you achieve that goal or to practice that new habit,

You should first sit for a moment and remember this emotion and try to recreate that emotion in your brain.

And it will make it easier hopefully for you to keep doing the habit or keep moving forward towards your goal.

So put yourself in a comfortable position.

You could be seated on a cushion on the floor or seated in a chair or lying flat on your back on the ground.

And let's take a deep cleansing breath to focus ourselves.

So let's take a nice long deep breath in through the nose,

Hold it,

And then out through the mouth again nice and slowly.

Now think of a goal or a new habit that is important to you,

A change you're trying to bring about in your life,

Something meaningful or purposeful that you want to accomplish in your life.

Think about it.

Now imagine in the future you have achieved that goal,

You have established that new habit.

Think about how good that's going to feel.

Imagine what the expression will be on your face,

That big big smile,

Feeling proud,

Feeling a sense of accomplishment,

Feeling like you overcame some big hurdle.

Think about establishing that new habit.

How good that's going to feel.

How much happier or healthier or more accomplished you're going to feel.

Think about that feeling.

Sit with it.

You may even want to imagine your future self thanking your present day self for having established this goal or the intention to establish that new habit.

Think about how good that gratitude is going to feel.

Now let's seal it with another deep cleansing breath.

Slowly in through the nose,

Hold it,

And then out through the mouth.

You may want to repeat this meditation every few days to solidify the emotional connection.

Now again,

Every time you're thinking of doing something or have scheduled a time to do something that will help you get closer to achieving that goal or it's the time of day to do that new habit,

Sit for a moment and remember the strong emotions that you're going to feel,

That sense of accomplishment,

Of pride,

Of happiness,

Of joy that you're going to feel when you accomplish that goal or have established that new habit.

And hopefully it will make it easier to take that step forward or to repeat that habit yet again.
