Very brief instruction, technique, and practice period to help discern when attention is on or off the meditation object. Practice this solo, without external guidance. Experiment, if need be, by altering, adjusting, and adding just enough so it works best for you then stick with it at least for a few meditation sessions.

Discernment of meditation object.

It's a really brief technique to help keep the attention and awareness on our meditation object.

So let's just choose a meditation object.

The universal one is breath.

I'll be using something else.

And then I'll ring the bell before and after this meditation.

If you're a visual person,

Just use a stoplight,

Except only the green and red.

So a green will indicate staying with the meditation object,

And a red will indicate that the tension has wandered off the meditation object.

This is no big deal in everyday life.

If we encounter a red light,

It's just a minor bummer at worst.

And then I'll turn to green and back on the meditation object.

If an audio person,

More word-based,

Language-based,

We can just mentally note silently,

Meditation object,

Not meditation object.

Or even better than those two is just knowing when we're on the meditation object,

And knowing when we're not.

Close your eyes if you're ready.

Take a bright,

Relaxed posture very briefly.

You you you you
