Welcome to this exploration through the five senses.
I invite you to find a comfortable position,
Whether you choose to sit upright or lie down.
Allow yourself this moment to just find your little space.
That you can fully arrive in this moment.
Let your hands rest wherever they naturally fall.
And if it feels good,
Allow your eyes to close.
For this little pocket of time,
There is nothing you need to accomplish here.
Or figure out.
You are simply going to practice something wonderfully ordinary.
Being here.
We spend so much of our lives moving quickly through our senses.
Seeing without looking.
Hearing without really listening.
Eating without fully tasting.
Touching.
Without truly feeling.
Breathing without noticing the breath at all.
So today we are going to turn the ordinary into ritual.
One sense at a time.
And let the senses become a doorway back into the present moment.
Begin by noticing your natural breath.
Don't change it just yet.
Simply feel the inhale arriving.
And the exhale leaving.
Now inhale a full three-dimensional breath.
Filling into your belly.
Expanding into your ribcage.
And chest.
Pausing for and exhaling slowly from the chest.
Through the ribs.
To the galley.
And again,
Inhale,
Belly,
Ribs,
Chest,
Pausing.
And exhale.
Chest.
Ribs.
One more time.
Inhale fully.
Feeling that expansion.
And pausing for and then exhale,
Really feeling that breath slowly.
Leaving your body the same way it came in.
And the next time you inhale,
Imagine you're making space inside yourself.
And as you exhale,
Imagine.
Setting down whatever does not belong to this moment.
And let your breath return to its own natural rhythm.
The ritual has begun.
You have arrived.
With your eyes still closed,
If they are.
Notice the darkness behind your eyelids.
There may be colors or shapes.
Or movement.
Perhaps tiny flashes of light.
You don't have to name any of it.
Simply notice.
And now imagine opening your eyes slowly.
Not because you need to look at anything.
But because you are practicing seeing.
If your eyes remain closed,
Simply imagine this.
Choose one ordinary thing in your surroundings.
A wall,
A window.
A plan.
A pet.
A shadow.
And imagine looking at it as though you have never seen it before.
Notice its shape.
Its edges.
Its texture.
The way light touches it.
There is a quiet intimacy and really seeing what is already here.
Let this be a ritual.
I will allow myself to notice.
Bring your attention to sound.
Don't search for silence.
Instead,
Listen for everything.
The sounds closest to you.
Then the sounds further away.
Perhaps you can hear something beyond the room.
And beneath it all,
The subtle hum of your own breath.
Notice how you don't have to reach for any sound.
The world simply arrives.
Again and again.
Let yourself listen without judging.
Without deciding whether a sound is pleasant or irritating.
To sound.
And presence.
And quietly remind yourself.
I am here.
I am listening.
Now,
Bring your awareness to the sensation of touch.
Feel the weight of your body being held by the surface beneath you.
Notice the temperature of the air against your skin.
The feeling of your clothing on your body.
The position of your hands.
The texture beneath your fingertips.
You might gently press your thumb and forefinger together.
Feel the contact.
The tiny ridges of your own unique fingerprints.
There is so much information in a single moment of touch.
And yet,
How rarely do we stop long enough to receive it.
Maybe brushing your hand gently along your arm.
Let your body become an instrument of awareness.
Nothing to fix or change.
Just feeling all of the sensations.
And quietly say to yourself.
I am willing to feel this moment.
Bring your awareness now to your mouth.
Notice the taste that is already there.
Perhaps there is very little.
Or something lingering.
Don't judge it,
Simply notice.
Now imagine tasting something you love.
A right piece of fruit.
Warm tea.
Dark chocolate Freshmen.
Something simple that you would love to eat without even thinking about it.
And imagine taking one slow,
Conscious taste.
Notice the first impression.
The texture.
The subtle changes.
The way the flavor fades.
Taste asks us to slow down.
To receive.
To experience.
Instead of consume.
Let that be your ritual.
I will receive this moment instead of rushing through it.
Now bring your attention to the sense of smell.
And take a slow breath in through your nose.
Notice the air itself.
Its temperature.
Its subtle scent.
And imagine a scent that immediately transports you somewhere.
Fresh rain.
Ocean salty air.
The forest.
Clean sheets.
Fresh coffee in the morning.
Someone you love.
A place you once felt completely at ease.
Notice how quickly it is sent.
Can open a doorway to memory.
How the body remembers what the mind sometimes forgets.
Take another slow breath in through your nose.
And as you exhale,
Let yourself appreciate the ordinary.
The simplicity.
Of being alive enough to experience the world.
In this way.
And now.
Gathering all the five senses together.
Notice what you can see.
Or imagine seeing.
Notice what you can hear.
Notice what you can feel.
Notice what you can taste.
Notice what you can smell.
And notice your breath moving through it all.
You don't need to hold on to any sensations.
You don't need to make this moment beautiful.
You only need to inhabit it.
And take one slow breath in through your nose.
And exhale through gently parted lips.
Again in our presence.
Exhale,
Resistance.
One final time.
Inhale this moment exactly as it is.
And exhale into the quiet knowing that you are already here.
Before you leave this meditation.
Remember,
You do not need extraordinary experiences to feel connected in your life.
Sometimes presence is simply noticing the warmth of sunlight on your skin.
Truly tasting your morning coffee.
Hearing someone you love laugh.
Feeling your bare feet against the ground.
And taking one breath slowly enough to actually feel it.
The senses are always offering you a way back.
Away back from yesterday.
A way back from tomorrow.
Away back from the endless noise of the mind.
And into this.
This breath.
This body.
This moment.
Let the next ordinary thing you experience today become a small ritual.
Not something to rush through,
But something to receive.
And take one final beautiful breath in.
And Allah.
And hurry,
Breath out.
And when you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
And look around as though you're seeing your life for the first time.
You are here.
And for this moment.
That is enough.
