With mindfulness meditation,
It's important to remember that thoughts are normal.
Our brain's job is to bring us back.
It's also important to not follow the thoughts around.
And one of my favorite metaphors,
I've got an updated version.
I got myself a snow globe.
Because.
.
.
I don't know about you,
But there are many times when my brain feels like that,
With all my thoughts just like swirling around.
And the thing about,
Sorry,
The thing about a snow globe is.
.
.
You have to stop shaking it.
For the glitter to settle.
When the glitter's swirling around,
There's nothing I can do to force the glitter to settle down.
And the more I try to,
You know,
Settle,
Settle,
It's just shaking up more.
You have to stop shaking it.
And be patient.
And notice that some of it will settle right away.
But there's still some lingering floaty bits.
And to me,
That's how my meditation practice often feels.
Now,
I love this updated version on a traditional technique.
Which are teaching.
Which is remembering that to separate muddy water,
You have to stop stirring it.
That's the only way to get the mud to settle.
To get the clear water.
And that's what we do in our meditation practice,
Or at least the mindfulness meditation that I lead here on Wednesday mornings.
Is we notice.
What's going on with our mind.
And then we just practice being with it.
What does it feel like to not shake our minds?
To not disturb our thoughts more.
Hmm.
It's not always easy,
But it's definitely a worthwhile practice,
And I hope that you join me soon.
