Our breath is really useful because in many ways it's like a barometer for how we're feeling.

For example,

If we're feeling stressed or anxious our breath might be constricted or shallow and if we're feeling at ease or happy our breath might be more open and soft.

So the more that we're able to pay attention and recognize our breath,

The more that we're going to be able to understand our emotions as well.
