Hello friend and welcome to the New Earth Shift podcast where we explore how to create a more conscious and compassionate world for ourselves and others.
I'm your host,
Hélène Mouton,
And I'm so glad you're here.
In today's episode,
We're going to talk about one of the most important skills that we need to develop in ourselves and in our society.
Equanimity Equanimity is the ability to remain calm and balanced in the face of challenges and difficulties.
Equanimity can help us regulate our nervous system,
Which is very saturated these days due to stress and anxiety.
But what is equanimity exactly?
How do we practice it?
And why is it so beneficial for us and for our nervous system?
These are some of the questions that we will explore in this episode.
We will also learn some tips and tools to help us cultivate equanimity in our daily lives.
But before we dive into that,
Let me ask you a question.
Do you feel stressed or anxious often?
Do you have trouble sleeping or relaxing?
Do you experience physical or emotional symptoms such as headaches,
Muscle tension,
Fatigue,
Irritability or mood swings?
If you answered yes to any of these questions,
Then you're not alone.
Many people suffer from chronic stress and anxiety,
Which can have a negative impact on their health and well-being.
Stress and anxiety are natural responses to perceived threats or challenges.
They activate our sympathetic nervous system,
Which prepares us for fight or flight.
This means that our heart rate,
Blood pressure,
Breathing and metabolism increase,
While our digestion,
Immunity and reproduction decrease.
This helps us deal with the immediate danger or problem.
However,
When stress and anxiety become chronic or excessive,
They can overwhelm our nervous system and cause problems.
Our sympathetic nervous system stays on high alert for too long,
While our parasympathetic nervous system,
Which is responsible for rest and digest,
Gets suppressed.
This creates an imbalance in our nervous system,
Which can lead to physical and mental disorders such as insomnia,
Ulcers,
Inflammation,
Depression or panic attacks.
That's why it's important to regulate our nervous system and restore its balance.
One of the best ways to do that is to practice equanimity.
Equanimity means having a balanced and calm attitude towards whatever is happening in our life,
Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant,
Desirable or undesirable,
Expected or unexpected.
It doesn't mean being indifferent or passive,
But rather being aware and accepting of the reality of the present moment,
Without resisting or clinging to it.
To practice equanimity,
We need to recognize that everything in life is impermanent and changing.
Nothing stays the same forever.
This includes our thoughts,
Feelings,
Sensations,
Situations,
Relationships and even ourselves.
Everything arises and passes away in a constant flow of change.
This can be both comforting and challenging to realize.
It means that whatever we are going through right now will not last forever.
It will change sooner or later.
For better or worse,
The key to equanimity is to accept both sides of this reality,
The good and the bad,
The joy and the sorrow,
The gain and the loss,
To accept them without detachment or aversion,
Without craving or fear,
Without expectation or disappointment,
To accept them with openness and curiosity,
With gratitude and compassion,
With wisdom and courage.
When we practice equanimity,
We can regulate our nervous system in a natural and healthy way.
This helps us heal and recover from stress and anxiety.
Equanimity also helps us reduce the intensity and frequency of stress and anxiety in the first place.
When we are equanimous,
We don't react to situations or emotions with panic or anger.
Respond to them with calmness and clarity.
We don't let them overwhelm or control us.
We let them come and go without getting attached or identified with them.
Practicing equanimity also helps cope with stress and anxiety in a more positive and constructive way.
We don't avoid or escape from our problems.
We face them with confidence and resilience.
We don't blame or criticize ourselves or others.
We learn from our mistakes and grow from our challenges.
As you can see,
Equanimity is a powerful skill that can help us regulate our nervous system and deal with stress and anxiety in a healthy way.
It can make us more balanced,
Calm and peaceful.
And all you have to do is to start a training.
