Just coming in,
Enjoying the moments you're giving yourself to be still and quiet,
And to slow down.
Slow,
Still,
And quiet.
Not unmoving,
Not silent.
That's impossible.
Just heavy,
In body and light,
In spirit,
With an overwhelmingly generous awareness of self and environment.
Close your eyes if you're in a place to do so,
And just start sinking in to wherever you are to this very moment,
Quitting on the world that was,
And denying the world that will be,
But just being in this time,
This meditation,
This gift you're giving yourself.
Begin by noticing with a generous awareness,
Which is to say that whatever you notice,
You don't judge,
You praise,
You take gratitude or pride in.
Give it the best possible interpretation,
That generous awareness.
You can scan your body,
Notice your breath.
Not what you need to be,
Not what you should be,
Not what you wish you could be,
Just what you are.
Sore,
Comfortable,
Breathing deeply,
Ragged,
Tired,
Excited,
Just narrate to yourself where you are right now.
Oh,
I'm hungry.
Oh,
I'm sad.
Yes,
There are birds nearby.
I can feel the warmth of the sun,
Or hear the breeze.
Maybe you say something kind.
You make me feel so good,
You say to yourself.
Thank you for taking this time.
You're sweet.
Just inhaling down deeply,
And exhaling out slowly,
And rejoicing in the moment.
Each moment is precious,
Something to hold on to.
You will inevitably distract yourself,
Wander into the past or the future,
Anxiety,
Regret.
Okay,
Inevitable,
Just return,
Come back,
Narrate the moment,
Feel your body,
Feel your feelings,
And breathe a little deeper in,
A little slower out.
That's all you have to do.
We're going to let our thoughts drift to a cultivated image.
Picture yourself in an open space,
Could be a park,
Could be a meadow,
Could be a beach,
A glade on a mountaintop.
You could be standing,
Seated,
Or lying down,
Or just in the position you're in now.
You are in a vast space,
With more than enough room to share.
How does it feel?
Is it comfortable?
Can you make the space more comfortable for you,
Safer in your mind?
The space is welcoming and inviting,
Free for all.
Breathe into that openness.
As you look around in your mind's eye,
You see family and loved ones.
Sure,
Family is not always easy.
We'll accept that.
But family is connection and connected.
Mother,
Brother,
Sister,
Son,
Father,
Cousin,
Aunt,
Uncle,
Even grandchildren,
And great,
Great grandparents.
They can all be present with you in this space.
And if there are people that make you uncomfortable or nervous,
They don't have to be nearby.
You are surrounded by the people in your family that feel safe and that make you feel safe.
Even our ancestors and descendants.
Breathe into that kinship,
That kind of connectedness.
And nearby are your oldest and your newest friends,
And everyone in between,
Classmates,
Co-workers,
People you went to parenting classes with,
People on your sports teams,
People who make you laugh and smile and take you out when you're feeling bad,
People who live nearby and people you don't get to see often enough.
All those loved ones,
Your chosen family.
Bring their names to mind,
Their faces,
See them near you and close by,
Among your kin,
Hugging you,
Giving you a holding hand.
Maybe there are friends you haven't spoken to in a long time for reasons good or bad.
Maybe you can reconnect.
And all around you at this open gathering is camaraderie,
The joy of shared experience.
Breathe into it,
Take it all,
Let it feed you and nurture you.
And also,
Is there anyone you want to invite in,
A teacher,
A landlord,
Someone you've read about,
Old or new,
Someone you wish you could meet and have a conversation with?
Could be one person,
Could be several,
Could be a whole team.
In your mind's eye,
Bring them into the gathering.
Invite those special guests.
Call them by name,
Bring them in.
Feel that sense of hospitality and warmth as you breathe in and extend your welcome.
Sharing this space with special guests.
And maybe even a few uninvited strangers that you can't name or quite see.
Gathering kin and comrade and guest and even stranger close by,
Creating your own movement,
Your own tribe.
Let them all hold you as you hold them.
Blessings.
