Welcome.
How will you show up today?
This practice is designed to help you set an intention for how you wanna show up in your relationship today.
When life is going well and your relationship feels easy,
It's often easier to treat your partner and yourself in ways that reflect the person that you want to be.
But when life becomes busy,
Stressful,
Or your relationship feels strained,
It's natural to get caught up in difficult thoughts and emotions.
Those experiences can pull us away from acting like the partner we truly want to be.
Every relationship has challenging moments.
It's completely normal to sometimes have painful thoughts about your partner,
Your relationship,
Or even yourself.
Relationship challenges become ongoing struggles when we begin reacting from those difficult thoughts and feelings instead of responding from our values.
By deciding in advance how you want to show up today,
Even if difficult thoughts or emotions arise,
You create more opportunities for openness,
Connection,
Acceptance,
Growth,
And healing.
Today,
We'll use a brief imagery exercise to help you clarify how you want to show up for your partner and how you want to care for yourself within your relationship.
So first,
Find a comfortable position.
Allow your eyes to close or simply soften your gaze.
Take a slow breath.
In through your nose.
And gently exhale through your mouth.
Again,
Breathe in through your nose.
And out through your mouth.
Now simply notice the support beneath you.
Feel the chair holding your body.
Notice your feet resting on the floor.
If you'd like,
Gently press your heels into the ground and notice the steadiness beneath you.
Allow yourself to settle into this moment.
Now I'd like you to imagine your partner talking with a close friend.
The friend asks,
What's it like being in a relationship with them?
Imagine your partner describing you.
As the partner you most want to be.
Not a perfect partner,
But the partner whose actions reflect your deepest values.
What do you hope they would say?
How did they describe the way that you treat them?
How did they describe the way they feel when they're with you?
Take a few moments to let those answers emerge.
Now imagine you're having a difficult conversation with your partner.
Perhaps you're feeling hurt,
Angry,
Disappointed,
Anxious,
Or scared.
Just notice the feelings and notice that they're allowed to be here.
And now ask yourself.
If I want my actions to reflect the person that I want to be,
How do I want to treat my partner in this moment,
Even with these difficult feelings here?
Would you choose kindness,
Respect,
Curiosity,
Honesty,
Openness,
Compassion?
Would you want to be assertive while still remaining caring?
But you want to show yourself the same compassion that you offer your partner.
Or would you wanna offer your partner the same compassion you give yourself?
Imagine yourself moving through this conversation in a way that allows you to say,
Regardless of the outcome of this conversation,
I'm proud of how I showed up.
Now,
Taking what you've learned from these two scenes,
Choose three qualities that you most want to bring to your partner today.
Then choose three qualities you want to offer yourself today.
Now,
Say aloud or silently to yourself,
Regardless of what today brings,
In the spirit of being the person I wanna be,
I choose to treat my partner with,
And then name your three qualities.
And then say,
I choose to treat myself with.
And name those three qualities.
And as we bring this exercise to a close,
Take a slow,
Deep breath.
And exhale.
Noticing your feet on the floor,
Your body supported in the chair.
And as you breathe in again,
Imagine carrying these intentions with you into the rest of your day.
Not as rules you have to follow perfectly,
But as gentle reminders of who you want to be.
When you're ready,
Allow your awareness to return to the room,
Opening your eyes if they were closed.
This practice isn't about becoming the perfect partner.
It's about becoming more aware.
Because awareness creates the possibility of choice.
And every choice is another opportunity to move toward the relationship and the life you want to create.
