What Feels True Vs What Sounds Right
by Debra Ford
There’s a subtle but powerful difference between what sounds right… and what actually feels true. This reflection explores the quiet inner sense that guides us—often beneath logic, expectation, or what we think we “should” do. A Tao-based perspective on learning to recognize and trust that deeper knowing. A simple question to return to: Does this feel true for me… or does it just sound right?

Hello friend,
You know I've been working with the Tao for a long time and something I often see is this.
I was thinking about it recently while planning out a few things,
You know,
What looks right on paper versus what actually feels right,
What feels right in your heart.
And I know and you know that there's an important difference.
There's a difference between what sounds right and what actually feels true.
You know something can make perfect sense on paper,
It can be logical,
It can be rational,
It can be practical,
Even can be something encouraged by others.
And yet something inside of you doesn't fully settle with it.
That quiet feeling in your gut or in your heart,
It matters.
From a Tao perspective,
Your inner sense of what feels true is a kind of guidance,
A kind of guidance system.
It doesn't always speak loudly,
Sometimes it's a whisper.
It doesn't come always with great clarity and clear explanations.
But it is there,
You know it's there.
And the more we override it in favor of what we think we should do,
The more disconnected we can feel,
The more disconnected from our heart,
From our gut,
We can feel really disconnected over time.
So here's a simple question to return to.
Does this feel true for me or does it just sound right?
And learning to notice that difference can change the direction of your life in very subtle but very powerful ways.
Just something to explore in your own way.
Does this feel true for me or does it just sound right?
What's left for it?
