All emotions are just waves of energy. If we offer them no resistance and just allow ourselves to feel them they pass, leaving us unharmed. But we can resist feeling emotions we believe to be negative or painful, block them out because we believe they will be too much to endure. Or we allow ourselves to feel them and then hold on to them, repeating stories that remind us of our pain and keep us stuck. This is a calming meditation but it also offers a visual lesson that shows the effects of allowing emotions to freely pass, or blocking them in some way which is battering and keeps us from peace.

Close your eyes and imagine that you're floating on a vast warm ocean.

You can feel the water supporting you and you can feel a gentle breeze just ruffling your skin and ruffling the water.

Causing little waves to lap around you.

You can feel the warm sun gently soothing your skin and you can hear gulls in the background.

Perfectly peaceful.

And now imagine rather than an ocean of water,

This is an ocean of peace.

And you can imagine sinking deeper,

Deeper into the peace.

Dropping further into the stillness.

And the quiet and the safety of the deep.

The sea,

The ocean is boundless in front of you.

Boundless behind and to both sides.

It's bottomless beneath and space-like above.

Now you'll notice that there are waves in this ocean and you offer no resistance to the waves.

They approach you and pass through you and come and go.

Carry on their way.

And you will notice that as each wave passes,

It is a wave of peace.

And the peace passes through.

You feel the peace and then it's on its way.

And here is another wave of peace.

And a third.

Each washing away stress and leaving you calmer and ever more peaceful.

And ever more peaceful.

Now the next wave is a wave of joy.

You allow the wave to enter you.

You feel the joy and then it passes on its way.

And you drop back to peace.

And the next wave is a wave of sadness.

It approaches,

Passes through and it's on its way.

And you drop back into peace.

And the next wave is a wave of peace.

It enters you,

Passes through and it's on its way.

The next wave is a wave of anger.

It approaches and as it passes through,

You feel angry.

And then it's on its way,

Leaving you.

Leaving you.

And you drop back into peace.

And the next wave is a wave of fear.

Once again,

It approaches,

It passes through and you feel fearful.

And then it's on its way.

The next wave is peace.

And as it passes through,

It washes away any remnants of fear.

And you drop back,

Deeper still,

Into peace.

The next wave is a wave of gratitude.

It approaches,

Passes through and it's on its way.

It approaches,

Passes through and you feel grateful.

And then it's on its way.

The next wave is a wave of shame.

And again,

It approaches and passes through and it's on its way.

Now just imagine,

Rather than offering these waves no resistance and allowing them to pass through you,

Without losing any velocity or energy,

Just enter and move on.

Imagine you put up a barrier and you don't let the next wave enter.

You can imagine it approaching,

Bashing against you and being knocked back.

Here's the next one.

Approaches,

Bashes through you and is knocked back,

Causing turbulence.

And a third.

And a third.

Notice how it feels to be resisting these waves,

How it feels to have them bash into you with all that energy and then be knocked back.

And now imagine opening again.

So the next wave can simply pass through,

Washing any emotions away and leaving you in pure peace.

And now imagine with the next wave that you allow it to enter,

But you prevent it from leaving.

So here comes the wave,

It enters you and it can't pass on.

What happens in your body to all that energy?

And here's the next wave that enters and you block it from passing.

And a third.

And now just open again and allow the next wave to enter and pass through,

Washing away any turbulence in your being,

Leaving you still,

Calm and peaceful.

And here is another wave of peace.

And a third.

Just sink a little deeper into this vast ocean of peace.

You can notice that it's bottomless,

Boundless peace beneath,

Boundless peace in front,

Boundless peace behind and above.

And rest here a moment.

And now you can begin to return to the surface,

Just allowing yourself to gently rise up until you break through into the sunshine and the air.

And then when you're ready,

You can gently return your awareness to the room and open your eyes.
