You can use this short practice as a creative way to check in with yourself and a way to tap into a different perspective. This practice gets us connected to the right hemisphere of our brain, associated with intuition and emotional processing. It's fun and a good way to take a short break if you find yourself stuck in looping thought patterns.

Welcome.

For this short practice you'll need a couple of pieces of paper,

A pen or a pencil and if you've got them nearby then some coloured pens or pencils might also be nice but they're optional.

You can use this practice as a creative way of checking in with yourself and it's also a great way to tap into a different perspective or another way of knowing.

If you have a question or a situation that you're dealing with right now in your life perhaps write it down in a few words on a piece of paper then fold that piece of paper and put it away.

Alternatively you can just start straight away with the practice.

Take your piece of paper and pen or pencil and just draw a shape,

Any shape really,

A circle,

A triangle,

A square,

A rectangle or even something more amorphous and unruly,

Whatever feels right for you in this moment.

And then inside of the shape that you've made draw a squiggle,

A line,

Something abstract,

Just let your pen move over the paper without thinking about it.

It doesn't need to make sense and there's nothing to get right here.

And then take a look and notice what you see there on your piece of paper.

If you have coloured pens and pencils then you can now use them to fill in the shape and the squiggles in the shape in any way that feels right to you.

If you don't have colours then you could also use your pen or your pencil to add textures or patterns into the shape.

You can pause the recording if you need more time.

Otherwise when you're done take a look at your paper.

What do you see?

What stands out from the shape and the squiggles,

The lines,

The textures and the colours?

What's your overall sense of what you see?

You might like to take another piece of paper and jot down your thoughts on the shape.

A few words about the qualities that you see there,

Any associations you're making,

What you're observing on this piece of paper in your drawing.

Notice also how it makes you feel when you're looking at this image that you've created.

What are the emotions and thoughts that arise?

Maybe you even notice that there are some new sensations in your body.

And imagine that this image,

This shape that you created,

Had a voice.

Is there sound that it would make?

Might it have something to say to you?

And when you look at this image,

What strikes you as relevant to your life right now?

If you wrote down a question at the beginning,

Maybe see what connects back to that.

Is there some kind of wisdom or different perspective?

I'm going to leave you here,

But you might like to spend some more time exploring through journaling,

Through further creative play,

Or through doing it all over again.

Enjoy.
