And we begin in the normal manner by saying good morning,
Good evening,
Good afternoon,
Wherever you may be,
Whatever you may be doing,
Hello and welcome to this practice.
I'm going to start this practice with a poem.
There is a rhythm to reset,
There's a rhythm to rest,
A heartbeat in the wheels,
A lullaby in the land passing by.
And thank you so much for being here,
Thank you so much for showing up for yourself.
If you're in a child for your various paths,
What we're going to do tonight is we're going to board a train,
But it's a different kind of train.
The intention is not to arrive anywhere fast,
But to deliberately slow down,
To surrender.
I'm going to want to ask you to really feel the words that I speak,
Really drop in to the visuals and to totally and truly allow yourself to be captured.
So if you're lying down,
Lie down,
If you're sitting,
Push into the chair and allow yourself to just rest,
Relax and surrender.
I'm going to start by finding a point in front of us and inhaling through our nose,
Exhaling through our mouth,
And repeat on the inhale,
I am here,
And on the exhale,
I am present,
I am here.
Find a spot in front of you,
For me it's a water bath,
A bird water bath,
In the middle of the garden in front of me,
And I'm in Kenya.
Identify what it is and state where you are,
Inhale,
And we're going to take two deliberate breaths on an inhale and an exhale,
And on the second exhale,
We're going to gently close our eyes and begin the journey.
So inhale through the nose,
And exhale through the mouth,
Inhale,
Exhale,
As you do that gently close your eyes,
And let's begin.
This practice is for when sleep has been elusive,
Your mind fights the fall into rest.
Bring yourself on this journey with me,
And allow the sound of my voice,
The gentle natural rhythm of the journey,
To rock you toward stillness.
Lie back now,
Let's take a deep breath in and hold it at the top,
And slowly exhale fully,
Ease yourself into your bed,
Into your chair,
And allow your body to settle like luggage placed on a shelf.
You have arrived,
There's nowhere else to be,
Just here,
And you can move into sleep at any time along the way,
There's no destination you'll miss,
No wrong station to stop at.
This journey moves with you,
And let's begin with the breath,
A full soft inhale,
And now sigh it out,
And be rhythmic,
Like wheels turning beneath you,
Click-clack,
Click-clack,
Click-clack,
Inhale,
Feel the tension melt from your shoulders,
The weight of your day slipping away,
Like a coat hung by the door,
You've done enough.
Any worry you brought on board,
You can leave in the last carriage,
You won't need it tonight.
Notice your mind,
Like passing trees outside a window,
Thoughts appear then disappear,
Observe,
Don't hold,
Just see.
Now gently release,
Let the images fade,
Let the thoughts loosen their grip,
Let the feelings roll out the window,
Like steam from the engine,
And now see it,
An old steam train,
Green and black,
Carriages connected to it,
Sitting at a small countryside station,
It's a warm summer day,
It's the end of the day,
The sky drips gold across the fields,
See yourself on the platform of that station,
Bring and allow those visuals,
The platform has a few people milling around,
A porter pushing some luggage on a trolley,
Helping a passenger board,
What a comfortable familiar warm place this is,
You step onto the train,
Turn right,
Walk through one carriage,
Then another,
Each full,
Each buzzing with soft conversation and movement,
Until finally,
A single empty room,
The one that your ticket has guided you to,
You slide open the door,
Step in,
And there's a comforting smell of polished leather,
Crisp new sheets,
There's a bed made just for you,
Just for this journey,
Take off your coat,
Discard the stress,
The worry,
The distraction of the day and place it on a hook and lie down,
Place your head near the window,
And your body sinking into stillness,
The whistle blows,
It started to rain,
It's a warm rain,
It's comforting,
It settles your soul,
Calms your mind,
Allow it to just wash away the worry,
The train whistle blows,
People on the platform begin to move away,
Either boarding or leaving or waving goodbye to loved ones,
The conductor calls,
All aboard,
And just like that,
The train pulls forward,
First a strain,
As the locomotive engages,
Takes up the weight of the carriages,
Of the luggage,
Of the cargo,
Of the passengers,
Then slowly,
Gently,
It pulls forward,
Gentle,
Steady,
You feel the tug of motion,
The start of the clatter of wheels,
And the soft hum of a rainy night on the move,
The rhythm begins,
Click clack,
Click clack,
Outside your window,
You see hay bales,
Golden wheat,
Sheep,
Grazing in the glow,
Undisturbed by the rain,
It's a warm rain,
The sun is still out,
The land is grateful,
For the small droplets that quench its thirst from the day,
The sun touches the horizon now,
Amber light folding into violet,
And the distance,
Mountains,
Are they blurred like brush strokes on a canvas,
Everything softens,
Every colour fades into sleep,
You're watching it all,
Taking it all in,
Observing,
You watch and let it go,
Gratitude rises,
Not from thought,
But from presence,
From the beauty right in front of you,
You're relaxed,
Safe,
Held,
The light of the day dims,
Meadows fall away,
And the train slips into a forest,
You can smell the difference,
Wet pine,
Wet bark,
Cool wet earth,
Love to feel that familiar smell,
The trees close in,
Not to trap you,
But to hold you,
Moonlight flicks through the canopy,
And the hum of the train becomes your lullaby,
Your eyes get heavy,
The body still,
The heart at peace,
Whisper this with me,
Or simply just listen to these words,
Sleep comes,
Sleep restores,
Sleep heals,
I deserve to rest,
I deserve to stop,
I deserve to be,
I've done enough today,
There's nothing more to do,
Only this,
To breathe,
To be,
To sleep,
Every breath,
Every gentle movement carries me deeper into stillness,
I am at peace,
I am safe,
Now let these affirmations ripple through your body,
Like the train now rolling through quiet hills,
Repeat silently and gently to yourself,
I let go,
I allow myself to rest,
My body knows how to heal,
My breath is my companion,
I am worthy of calm,
I am deserving of peace,
Sleep is not something I chase,
It arrives just like the stars,
You feel it now,
Your muscles loose,
Your mind soft,
Your body heavy with peace,
No more striving,
No more angst,
No more anxiety,
No more headaches,
No more lists,
Thank you body,
Thank you mind,
Thank you soul,
You have brought me here,
To this moment,
To this track,
To this night,
Sleep is here,
No resistance,
No fear,
Only the sound of the train,
Clicking softly into the dark,
Click clack,
Click clack,
Let my voice fade,
Let your thoughts float,
Let the train carry you home,
Good night.
