Hi,
My name is Alejandro.
I am a mindfulness and wellness coach,
Meditation teacher,
Trauma-informed yoga instructor,
Mental health professional,
And someone who understands how complicated faith,
Healing,
And spirituality can become when the places that were supposed to protect us cost us hearts.
Today I want to talk about religious trauma.
What it is,
How it may affect us.
And what healing can look like.
Religious trauma is more than having one uncomfortable experience in a church,
A temple,
Mosque.
Or a spiritual community.
It can happen when religious teachings,
Leaders,
Family members,
Or communities use fear,
Shame,
Control,
Or punishment.
In ways that leave lasting emotional and psychological wounds.
Maybe you were taught that asking questions was disrespectful.
Maybe you were taught that your body was shameful,
Your sexuality was sinful,
Or your identity made you unacceptable.
Maybe anxiety was.
Described as a lack of faith,
Depression,
Treated as a spiritual weakness,
Or you were told to pray harder instead of receiving the support you needed.
Perhaps you were pressured to forgive someone who harmed you.
Without that person ever being held accountable.
Or maybe you were taught to remain silent and obedient even when something inside of you knew that what was happening was not okay.
Over time.
These experiences can shape the way you see yourself,
Relationships,
Spirituality,
And even the divine.
Religious trauma can look very different for everyone.
For some people,
It may show up.
As fear or anxiety when hearing certain scriptures,
Prayers,
Songs,
Sermons,
Or religious language.
You may feel guilty when you rest,
Set boundaries,
Express anger,
Explore your identity.
Or make choices for yourself.
You may struggle to trust your own thoughts because you were taught that your intuition was dangerous and or deceptive.
You might constantly fear doing something wrong,
Disappointing God,
Being punished.
Or losing the people you love.
And sometimes even after death.
Leaving the religious environment.
The fear remains.
The building may be gone.
The community.
May no longer be part of your life.
But the messages can continue to play inside of your mind.
Over and over again.
And I want to be clear,
Religious trauma is not limited to one religion or spiritual tradition.
It can happen anywhere spiritual teachings are used to shame.
Silence,
Manipulate,
Exclude,
Or control people.
It is also important to know that healing from religious trauma does not mean abandoning your faith.
Some survivors.
Leave religion completely.
Some.
Find a different spiritual tradition.
Some Rebuild the relationship with God,
Prayer,
Ritual,
Or spirituality.
In a way that feels safer and more honest.
And some.
Are still trying to figure it out.
All of those paths are valid.
You.
You don't have to rush into a new belief system.
You don't have to have it all figured out.
You don't have to have all the answers you are Allow to sit in uncertainty and ask questions.
You are allowed to.
Keep the parts of your spirituality that still feel meaningful and release the parts that cost you heart.
Your questions.
To not make you rebellious.
Your boundaries.
Not make you selfish.
Your anger.
Does not make you better.
Protecting yourselves.
Is not a failure of faith.
What happened to you.
Matters.
Your pain matters.
Is real.
And your healing.
Belongs to you.
You're worthy.
Of love that does not require you to hide.
You're worthy of love.
Belonging that doesn't demand your silence.
You're worthy.
Of discovering.
What faith,
Spirituality,
Healing,
And sacredness means.
For you now.
After watching or listening to this.
You may notice emotions,
Memories,
Or questions beginning to surface.
I invite you to take a moment.
To slow down.
Reconnect with yourself.
You can continue this healing practice.
By meditating with me through my guided track.
Beyond Fear,
Meditation for religious trauma.
Or by listening to.
A prayer after religious drama.
Were created to offer grounding,
Comfort.
And support as you continue navigating your healing journey.
Take a slow,
Gentle breath.
Give yourself permission to move at your own pace.
And remember it.
We don't have to heal everything,
Understand everything.
Or have everything figured out today.
Simply honour where you're at.
You're unloved.
You are supported.
You're always,
Always enough.
Stay healing.
Stay growing.
Stay steady.
Until next time.
