When Grief Appears During Healing
Healing is often expected to bring relief, clarity, and a sense of returning to self. Yet for many, grief begins to surface along the way—sometimes unexpectedly. In this video, we explore how this experience is not a setback, but a natural part of the body and nervous system processing what was not previously able to be felt. When grief arises in this way, it can be met with compassion and allowed to move at a pace the body can safely hold.

Many people begin a healing journey expecting to feel better,
More clear,
More peaceful,
More like themselves.
And often that does happen,
But something else can happen too.
Grief can begin to surface,
Not because something has gone wrong,
But because something has finally become safe enough to feel.
As the nervous system begins to settle,
Experiences that were set aside,
Sometimes for many years,
Can begin to return.
Emotions that didn't have space before may start to move.
And this is sometimes what we might call unattended grief.
Grief that was never fully processed when it first occurred.
And this can feel confusing,
Because it doesn't always look like traditional grief.
Sometimes it shows up as heaviness,
Or fatigue,
Or waves of emotion that don't seem connected to anything happening now.
But this is not a setback.
It is often a sign that the body is beginning to process what it could not process before.
And in many ways,
This is where healing deepens.
Not by avoiding these experiences,
But by allowing them to move at a pace that the body can safely hold.
