The Hidden Cost Of Surviving Trauma
Trigger warning. You did what you had to do to survive, but now you are stuck in those old patterns. They worked (you are alive) so you are primed to repeat those same responses: fight, flight, freeze, fawn, fantasy. Unfortunately those same responses may no longer be necessary or helpful. But struggle to stop, or even realise you are still in survival mode. Thankfully you can heal. Over time, with therapy, meditation, and self love you can foster compassionate awareness and gradually see your world as it is and begin responding appropriately. Healing is possible.

Survival comes at a cost.
You did what you had to do to survive the trauma.
Yeah?
You fought back.
You fled.
You froze.
You fawned or you went into fantasy.
Whatever it was,
It worked.
Well done.
But now,
Now the danger's passed.
Now you're you trying to navigate the nervous system that was trained or programmed or came about in response to the trauma that was happening.
Unfortunately,
Those responses that worked back then may not work now,
But that's all your body and maybe your mental state knows as how to deal with things as they come.
You face modern stresses.
New stresses,
Things are rising in your life.
And what do you do?
You revert back to the same patterns.
So you fight,
You flee,
You fawn,
You freeze,
Or you turn to fantasy.
That worked,
But it may not work now.
The only way that you can heal from the healing.
Heal from the things you needed to do to survive,
Is to introspect.
Check in and see those processes happening.
Awareness is the key here.
Slow,
Calm breathing.
Daily meditation.
Therapy and,
Unfortunately,
Taking ownership.
You didn't ask for what happened to happen.
You would have preferred it not to.
And now you are living with the consequences.
But only you can save yourself and you can save yourself from the things that saved you initially.
With introspection.
With self-work.
With lots and lots and lots of Self-love.
Possible.
