Welcome,
Friends.
Find a comfortable seated position so we can begin this breath practice.
Sometimes it's called Mother's Breath,
Sometimes Sufi Mother's Breath.
It is a basic pranayama practice that anyone can do at any time.
Once you've come into a comfortable seated position,
Lungs expanded,
Spine is nice and long,
You can do this practice with a soft gaze off the bridge of the nose or if you want to fully close the eyes.
Just notice your breath,
Natural inhale and exhale as it is today.
And when we begin,
We will breathe in,
Inhaling in through the nose slowly for a slow count of seven.
If this is your first time doing this practice,
It may seem a little bit challenging,
But I encourage you to do what you can,
Start from where you're starting and just keep practicing this.
And soon it'll become a little less challenging.
So an inhale through the nostrils for a slow count of seven.
We will hold our breath at the top of the inhale just for a brief moment or two.
And then we will exhale out through the nose as well for a count of seven.
And then we will do a restriction or holding our breath at the bottom of our exhale for just a couple moments.
So take another breath in and an exhale out and we will begin our first cycle.
Exhale in slowly for one,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six,
Seven and hold.
And a slow exhale for seven,
Six,
Five,
Four,
Three,
Two,
One and a hold and release.
Wonderful.
Take in a normal breath in and a normal breath out.
And we will repeat.
Exhale in through the nose,
One,
Two,
Expand the lungs,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six,
Seven and a hold for a moment.
And exhale seven,
Six,
Five,
Four,
Three,
Two,
One and a hold and release.
Normal breath in and normal breath out.
Beautiful.
Let's do this breath cycle just one more time together.
When you're ready,
Inhale in slowly through the nose,
Expand the ribs,
One,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six,
Seven and a hold.
And a slow exhale seven,
Six,
Five,
Four,
Three,
Two,
One and a hold at the bottom and release.
Breathe in normally,
Take a moment of stillness.
Do you notice any new sensations?
Maybe you feel more expansive through the side body.
Whatever it may be,
Just take in this victory,
Take in this gift that you've given yourself today.
And I will leave you all with the mantra of the Sufi Mother's Pranayama Breath practice.
It is,
I breathe easily knowing that I am safe and secure.
Stay here for as long as you need and if you want to continue the cycles,
Please feel free to go through this and repeat this practice.
Listen to it over and over if it is a pranayama practice that is new to you and you want to cultivate and build that expansiveness through this breath practice.
So until next time,
Breathe easy friends.
