Welcome,
I'm Vince.
Today,
We are going to explore the paradox of effort,
The counterintuitive truth that sometimes,
Trying less actually allows more to emerge.
We are often taught that more effort automatically equals better results.
Push harder.
Try more.
Strive.
And in many areas of life,
That's true.
But there is another truth.
Certain things simply cannot be forced.
You cannot demand sleep.
You cannot chase down peace.
You cannot force a muddy glass of water to become clear by stirring it faster.
So today,
We will gently explore this balance.
What is your effort useful?
And where is it tightening into a necessary strain?
Let's begin.
Allow yourself to settle into a seated position or lie down if that feels better for you today.
Notice the surface beneath you.
Let your body be entirely held.
You don't need to do work of holding yourself up right now.
Bring your attention to the sensation of doing,
Even in physical stillness.
There is often a faint hum of effort in the background.
Scan your jaw.
Is it slightly clenched?
Let your tongue drop away from the roof of your mouth.
Scan your shoulders.
Are they lifted a fraction higher than necessary?
Bracing for a weight that isn't there?
Allow them to drop just a millimeter or two.
Notice your chest.
Is there a holding there?
A readiness to act?
Take a slow,
Deep breath in through your nose.
And as you exhale,
Imagine that the unnecessary effort drained downward,
Out of your body.
You are not collapsing.
You are simply releasing the excess of work.
Bring your awareness to your forehead and the space behind your ears.
Effort often hides in these very small places.
Soften that space.
Ask yourself gently,
What am I still trying to manage right now?
Let your breath widen around that question.
Now allow this question to settle into your mind.
Where in my life am I pushing too hard?
You don't need to solve it.
Just notice the first thing that arises.
Is it a project at work?
A relationship?
A standard you are holding yourself to?
Where are you trying to force clarity,
Progress,
Or certainty?
Feel how that pushing registers in your body.
Does it tighten your chest?
Does it make your breath shallow?
Does your belly contract?
Stay with that physical sensation for a moment.
Now gently ask,
Where can I allow natural flow?
Flow is not abandonment.
It is not neglect.
What would it mean to actively participate in your life?
Rather than gripping it so tightly.
Notice what happens in your body as you consider that.
Does something soften?
Does something resist the idea of letting go?
Let both reactions be present.
Remember the paradox.
Too much effort.
Can block what it seeks to create.
Like muddy water.
The more you stir it,
The less clear it becomes.
But when left undisturbed,
The dirt settles on its own.
Where might something in your life settle if you simply stopped stirring it?
Bring your attention back to your breath.
Imagine the feeling of effort as a light mist inside your body.
With each inhale,
Simply notice where the mist sits.
With each exhale,
Imagine the mist dissolving slightly.
Like fog burning off in the morning sun.
No force.
Just a gradual,
Natural clearing.
Breathing in.
And breathing out.
Softening.
Notice any shift in your energy.
Effort often feels sharp,
Narrow,
And forward leaning.
Letting go feels wider,
More spacious,
More receptive.
Let your body teach you the difference right now.
We are not eliminating effort entirely.
Some effort is healthy and necessary.
But strain is different from intention.
Let your next breath be intentional.
But completely unforced.
Notice the quiet strength in that.
Effort and ease are not enemies.
They are partners.
Wisdom is knowing when to lean in and when to soften.
Begin to bring your awareness back to the room around you.
Notice the sounds,
The temperature of the air,
The light against your eyelids.
Take one slow breath in through your nose.
And an easy breath out through your mouth.
Notice what arises when you soften your grip.
Perhaps there is clarity or relief or even a little uncertainty.
All of it is welcome.
Carry this paradox into your day.
When you feel something pushing too hard,
See if you can pause and experiment with softening.
Sometimes trying less allows much more to emerge.
Thank you for practicing with me today.
The inner light in me sees the inner light in you.
Namaste.
