Welcome,
Friend.
I'm so glad you've chosen to spend these quiet moments with God before you sleep.
Wherever today has found you,
Whether it has been peaceful,
Busy,
Joyful,
Or simply exhausting,
You've arrived here now.
And that's enough.
Find a comfortable position beneath your blankets.
Allow your head to become heavy against the pillow.
Let your shoulders soften.
Let your hands rest naturally wherever they fall.
There is nowhere else you need to be.
Nothing more to accomplish.
Nothing left to finish before God welcomes you into his presence.
The day has come to its gentle close.
And now.
You're invited to rest.
Take one slow breath in through your nose.
And slowly let it go.
Again,
Breathing in God's peace.
Breathing out everything you've been carrying.
One more gentle breath.
And as you exhale,
Imagine the pace of the day quietly leaving your body.
The conversations.
The responsibilities.
The unfinished list.
The decisions that still need to be made.
None of those belong to this moment.
This moment belongs only to rest.
Tonight our breath prayer comes from the imitation Jesus himself gives.
As you breathe in,
Simply pray.
Jesus,
Give me rest.
And as you breathe out.
I receive your peace.
Again inhale Jesus,
Give me rest.
Exhale.
I receive your peace.
There is no rush.
Allow these words to become slower each time.
Eventually,
Perhaps they disappear altogether.
And only the peace remains.
Continue breathing naturally.
Whenever your thoughts wander,
Gently return to those simple words,
Jesus,
Give me rest.
I receive.
Your peace.
Your breathing has already begun to slow.
Without trying.
Without effort.
Your body knows how to rest.
It's been carrying you all day.
Holding you upright.
Helping you work.
Helping you care for others.
Helping you solve problems.
Helping you simply make it through another ordinary day.
Now it no longer needs to carry any of that.
Feel the mattress beneath you.
It supports every part of you.
Every muscle,
Every joint.
Every place that has grown weary.
You don't have to hold yourself up anymore.
The bed is holding you.
And beneath even that,
God is holding you.
There's a beautiful freedom in being supported.
In allowing yourself to simply receive.
Your forehead softens.
Your eyes grow heavy.
Your jaw releases.
Even the tiny muscles around your mouth begin to rest.
Your neck grows loose.
Your shoulders sink just a little farther.
Almost as though they have been waiting all day for permission to let go.
Your arms feel comfortably heavy.
Your hands become still.
Your chest rises and falls effortlessly.
Your belly softens.
Your hips grow heavy.
Your legs settle deeper into the mattress.
Your feet become warm,
Relaxed,
Still.
Your whole body seems to whisper.
I am safe.
Stay here for several quiet breaths.
Listen now to these words from Jesus.
Not as something you must study.
Not as something to remember.
Simply receive them.
As though he was sitting quietly beside you.
Looking at you with kindness,
Speaking gently into everything you've carried today.
Come to me,
All who are weary and burdened.
And I will give you rest.
Notice that Jesus doesn't say.
Calm wind.
You've figured everything out.
He doesn't say,
Come.
Once you've finished everything.
He simply says,
Come.
Exactly as you are.
Weary.
Burdened,
Tired.
Perhaps tonight that invitation is for you.
Imagine yourself slowly placing every burden you've carried today into his hands.
Not because those things don't matter.
But because they matter to him.
The conversations.
The worries.
The responsibilities.
The people you love.
The things you cannot control.
One by one.
You place them into the capable hands of Christ.
And with every burden release.
Your own heart becomes lighter.
Your breathing grows slower.
Your body sinks deeper into rest.
Jesus continues.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
For I am gentle and humble in heart.
Gentle,
Not hurried.
Not demanding,
Gentle.
Imagine resting beside him.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing extraordinary.
Just the quiet comfort of being near someone who carries peace wherever he goes.
His presence requires nothing from you tonight.
You don't have to impress him.
You don't have to perform for him.
You simply rest.
The room has become wonderfully quiet now.
Your breathing has settled into an easy rhythm.
Perhaps your thoughts have already begun to drift.
That's perfectly okay.
You don't need to hold tightly to these words.
Simply let them wash over you,
Like gentle waves reaching the shore.
Calming,
Go away.
Coming.
Going.
Every breath carries you deeper into God's peace.
Every exhale softens another place inside you.
The day continues to grow farther away.
Tomorrow has not yet arrived.
There is only this quiet moment.
Only this gentle breath only the steady presence of God.
He is watching over you.
Not anxiously,
Not from distance,
But like a loving father who delights in his child resting peacefully.
Even while you sleep.
He remains awake.
Even while your mind becomes quiet.
His care never ceases.
You are safe.
Your love.
You are whole.
Jesus,
Thank you for inviting weary people to come to you.
Tonight we come exactly as we are.
Some of us are physically tired.
Some emotionally exhausted.
Some caring worries we haven't been able to put into words.
Yet none of these things surprise you.
Thank you that you never grow tired of receiving us.
Would you quiet every anxious thought?
Relax every tense muscle.
Bring peace where there has been striving.
Hope where there has been discouragement.
Comfort where there has been loneliness.
And rest where there has been weariness.
As sleep comes,
May it be deep.
Restorative.
Healing.
And filled with the quiet awareness that you remain near.
In your loving name.
Now there's nothing left for you to do.
Nothing left to listen for.
Nothing left to accomplish.
Simply continue breathing.
Resting,
Receiving If sleep comes,
Welcome it.
If you remain awake a little longer,
Simply stay here with God.
The night is peaceful.
The room is still.
Christ is near.
Come to me.
And I will give you rest.
Allow those words to become softer.
And softer.
Until they fade gently.
Into silence.
Rest well.
You're a deeply loved friend.
You Thanks for watching.
