Kirtan Kriya is a seated solo meditation of about twelve minutes, chanting Sa Ta Na Ma with sequential fingertip movements, from Kundalini yoga. Communal Kirtan is group call-and-response devotional singing. Most of the clinical research names Kirtan but actually studies Kirtan Kriya.
Bhajan
Bhajans are Hindu devotional songs that can be sung alone or together, but they lack Kirtan's defining structure of a leader calling a phrase, the group answering, and the tempo escalating toward a peak.
Silent mantra meditation
Silent mantra meditation repeats a sacred word or phrase internally, alone and without sound. Kirtan sings mantras and divine names aloud, in a group, as participatory call-and-response music.
