Hello,
Dear ones,
And welcome to today's reading,
Part two of The Girl Who Walked Through Worlds,
A short story that I wrote as part of a collection.
So,
Just as always,
Taking a few moments to arrive here,
Wherever you may be.
Maybe taking some longer,
Deeper breaths,
And allowing yourself to arrive here fully,
Knowing that this time is for you,
And that there's nothing that you have to do right now.
When you are ready,
Dear ones,
We will begin.
As the days passed,
Maya grew more comfortable with the strange world around her.
Each trial seemed to stretch her in new ways,
Testing not just her bravery,
But her ability to grow and change.
With every challenge,
She felt herself becoming a little stronger.
A little more sure of herself.
But nothing could have prepared her for the next trial,
Hidden deep within a foggy valley that seemed to exist outside of time itself.
This is the Tower of Forgotten Dreams,
Miss Elsbeth said,
Her voice taking on a more serious tone as they approached the looming structure in the distance.
The tower was tall,
Much taller than any building Maya had ever seen,
Its spires reaching high into the mist.
It seemed to float just above the ground,
As if suspended by nothing more than the weight of forgotten hopes.
Inside,
You'll find what you've left behind,
What you've abandoned or given up on,
Miss Elsbeth explained.
The tower will show you those things,
And it will try to make you believe that they are more important than your future.
Maya swallowed hard.
What do I do?
You enter,
And you face what you've given up.
Only then will the trial be complete.
Maya hesitated for only a moment before stepping into the tower,
The air growing colder as she crossed its threshold.
Inside,
The walls were covered in shifting images,
Glimpses of her past,
Of things she had once dreamed of,
But now had abandoned.
A picture of herself as a little girl,
Holding a paintbrush,
Painting a bright red dragon on a piece of paper.
A notebook filled with stories she had written,
But never finished.
A pair of worn ballet slippers,
Discarded in a corner.
Each image chugged at her heart,
Reminding her of the dreams she had once cherished and then left behind.
But as Maya walked deeper into the tower,
Something began to change.
The images started to blur,
And the weight of her past dreams no longer felt so heavy.
I don't need to hold on to these anymore,
Maya whispered to herself.
They are part of who I was,
But they are not who I am now.
And with that realization,
The images stopped shifting.
The weight lifted,
And the tower seemed to crumble.
The walls began to dissolve into dust,
And Maya found herself standing in an open field,
The mist clearing around her.
Miss Elsbeth appeared beside her,
Smiling warmly.
You've done it,
Maya.
You've let go of what you no longer need.
Maya felt lighter than she had in ages,
And for the first time,
She felt ready for what lay ahead.
After the Tower of Forgotten Dreams,
The world around Maya began to feel even more alive,
As though it were reflecting the changes she was going through.
The air was clearer,
The colors more vibrant,
And the sense of possibility stronger than ever.
Miss Elsbeth led Maya up a winding path through a dense forest that grew more and more dense the further they went.
The trees began to thin as they reached the base of a massive mountain.
Its peaks hidden in the thick clouds.
The air grew cold,
Biting,
And the path upward became steep and rocky.
Maya could feel the weight of the journey ahead.
This is the Mountain of Forgotten Fears,
Miss Elsbeth said,
Her voice carrying a note of quiet reverence.
It's a place where your deepest fears take physical form.
To reach the top,
You must confront each of them.
Maya's stomach twisted.
She had already faced so much in this world.
Was there really more that she had to face?
The fear of the unknown.
The fear of being alone.
The fear of failure,
Miss Elsbeth continued,
Her voice suffering.
All these things are part of you,
And they must be faced before you can climb to the top.
Maya felt a cold shiver run down her spine.
She wasn't sure she was ready for this.
But Miss Elsbeth had been right so far.
She had faced her grief and her past,
And now it was time to face her greatest fears.
With a deep breath,
Maya stepped onto the mountain's path,
The weight of each step increasing.
As she ascended.
The first manifestation of fear came swiftly.
As Maya climbed,
The ground beneath her cracked and split,
And a deep voice echoed from the earth,
You'll never make it to the top.
The voice was like a poison to her resolve,
Whispering words of doubt.
She faltered,
The mountain shaking beneath her feet.
You are not good enough,
The voice hissed.
You'll fail,
Just like you failed before.
You'll fall,
Maya.
Maya stopped,
Panic rising in her chest.
The path before her seemed so treacherous now.
Was it true?
Had she really failed at everything she tried?
Was she just going to fail again and again?
But then she remembered something Miss Elsbeth had said.
Bravery isn't about being fearless.
It's about facing those fears anyway.
Maya squared her shoulders and took another step.
And then another.
Her legs trembling,
But each step stronger than the last.
I'm not afraid of you,
She whispered to the voice.
I won't give up.
The voice went silent.
The shaking of the ground slowing to a halt.
The fear was gone,
Dissipated by her own determination.
She continued on,
The climb becoming easier with each step.
As Maya neared the summit,
The next fear appeared.
This one even more terrifying than the first.
From the clouds above,
A shadowy figure descended,
Its outline shifting like a cloud of smoke.
It was massive,
Towering over Maya,
Its glowing eyes staring down at her.
You can't do this alone,
It said.
You need someone else.
You need help,
Maya.
You can't face this by yourself.
Maya froze,
Her heart racing.
Was the shadow right?
Hadn't she always relied on others?
Her parents?
Her aunt?
The witch?
Could she really face her fears alone?
But then,
She remembered what Miss Elsbeth had taught her.
That she was stronger than she knew.
She didn't have to rely on anyone else to climb this mountain.
She could do it herself.
With a surge of courage,
Maya stepped forward and called out,
I'm not alone.
I have everything I need within me.
The shadow screamed,
A wail that echoed through the mountains,
And then it faded,
Disappearing into the mist.
At last,
Maya reached the top of the mountain,
Where the sky opened up to reveal a breathtaking view of the entire magical world below her.
The clouds parted and the sun shone down,
Warming her face as she breathed in the cool mountain air.
Miss Elsbeth stood nearby,
Watching her with a proud smile.
You've done it,
Maya.
You've faced your fears and overcome them.
Maya stood tall,
Her heart swelling with pride.
She had done it.
She had climbed the mountain and faced everything that had once seemed impossible.
And now,
Standing at the top,
She felt stronger than ever before.
I think I'm ready for the next trial,
Maya said.
Miss Elsbeth chuckled softly.
You've come far,
Maya.
But remember,
Each trial is only one step in the journey.
There's always more to discover about yourself,
And more courage to uncover.
Maya smiled,
Her heart light.
She knew she was ready for whatever came next.
With each trial,
She was not only learning about magic,
But about herself and how brave she truly was.
The days blurred together as Maya continued her journey through the magical worlds,
Each more puzzling and challenging than the last.
After the mountain of forgotten fears,
She felt invincible,
Braver than she'd ever thought possible.
But little did she know,
The next trial would test her patience and understanding of time itself.
Miss Elsbeth led Maya to the edge of a vast,
Twisting labyrinth.
It's walls made of strange,
Shimmering vines that glowed with a pale blue light.
This is the maze of lost time,
Miss Elsbeth explained.
A place where time doesn't flow as it should.
You'll face moments from your past and your future,
All tangled together.
To leave,
You must find your way through.
But beware,
Time will try to deceive you.
Maya's brow furrowed.
I don't understand.
How can time deceive me?
The maze pulls from your memories,
Your hopes and your fears,
Miss Elsbeth said.
It will try to confuse you,
Make you believe that the past is the present and that what lies ahead is already set in stone.
But you must trust yourself,
Maya.
Only by letting go of your fears of time can you escape.
Maya felt a chill creep down her spine.
But I don't want to forget,
Or to get stuck.
You won't,
Miss Elsbeth said reassuringly.
Not if you're willing to face it.
Time is a tricky thing,
But it's yours to control.
With those words,
Miss Elsbeth opened the entrance to the maze,
And Maya stepped in.
The vines parting as if welcoming her.
The further Maya ventured into the labyrinth,
The more disorientating it became.
The walls shifted,
And strange echoes filled the air.
At times,
It felt like she was walking backward through her life.
Images of her parents when they were alive.
The sound of her mother's laughter.
The sight of her father's comforting smile.
All rushing toward her as though they were happening in real time.
The feeling was so real that Maya's breath caught in her throat,
And she stopped,
Her heart aching.
I'm stuck in the past,
Maya whispered,
The weight of it all feeling too heavy to carry.
She wasn't ready to face her parents again.
Not yet.
Not in this way.
But then a soft voice broke through the memories.
Maya,
Don't forget.
You must keep moving forward.
This elspeth's voice called from somewhere ahead.
Maya blinked,
And the images around her began to flicker and dissolve.
The past was slipping away,
Replaced by new,
Unfamiliar sights.
She saw a vision of herself,
Standing in front of a crowded room,
Her face full of doubt and fear.
As if she was about to speak,
But couldn't find her voice.
The future,
Her future,
Stretched out ahead of her,
Filled with uncertainty.
This is what I'm afraid of,
Maya thought,
Her heart racing.
What if I can't do it?
What if I can't be the person I need to be?
The walls of the maze seemed to tighten around her,
And the silence grew heavy.
But then Maya closed her eyes,
Took a deep breath,
And remembered the trials she had faced so far,
The bravery she had discovered in herself.
She had crossed bridges of fear,
Confronted lost memories.
And climbed mountains of doubt.
She had learned that she didn't have to be afraid of what had already happened,
Or what might come.
The maze began to shift,
As though it were listening to her thoughts.
The walls parted,
And Maya found herself standing in an open space.
The maze was gone,
Replaced by a wide open field,
Bathed in sunlight.
You've done it,
Maya,
Miss Elspeth said,
Stepping from the shadows.
You've let go of the grip that time had on you.
Maya looked around,
Feeling lighter than she had in the maze.
It wasn't just the past,
Was it?
It was the future,
Too.
Miss Elspeth nodded.
Exactly.
You were afraid of what might happen.
But now you know.
Time will always move forward.
But you are the one who chooses how you move through it.
Maya felt something shift inside her,
A calm certainty that she hadn't known she'd needed.
Time,
She realized,
Didn't control her.
She controlled how she faced it,
One step at a time.
The landscape shifted once again,
As Maya and Miss Elspeth journeyed onward,
Moving through fields and forests,
Across rivers and valleys,
Always moving forward.
Maya felt stronger,
More connected to this magical world.
But as they came to a quiet,
Serene garden,
She knew that the next trial would be different from the others.
The garden stretched out before them,
Its flowers blooming in vibrant hues,
Their petals like fragile glass.
Trees with golden leaves shimmered in the breeze,
And the air was sweet with the fragrance of lavender and rose.
The entire place felt peaceful.
Too peaceful,
In fact.
This is the Garden of Forgotten Souls,
Miss Elspeth explained.
It is a place where the spirits of those who have been forgotten wander.
Their stories are lost to time,
And they can never move on unless they are remembered.
Maya felt a chill creep up her spine.
What do I have to do here?
In this garden,
Maya,
You'll face the lost parts of your own soul,
Things you've buried or forgotten.
You must confront them and make peace with what has been left behind.
As Maya stepped forward,
The flowers at her feet seemed to grow brighter,
And she saw someone standing among the trees.
It was a child,
Roughly her own age,
With sad,
Longing eyes.
They stared at Maya as if waiting for her to notice.
Who are you?
Maya asked softly.
I am a part of you,
The child said,
In a voice that was both familiar and foreign.
I am the girl you left behind,
The girl who used to dream,
Who used to laugh.
Maya's heart clenched as she realized the truth.
The child was her,
Her younger self,
A version of her that had once been full of hope,
Laughter,
And joy,
Before life had taken its toll.
I've forgotten you,
Maya whispered.
I stopped being that girl.
The child's eyes softened,
And she smiled gently.
You never really left me.
I'm still here,
Waiting for you to remember.
Tears filled Maya's eyes as she reached out,
Taking the child's hand.
The world around them shimmered,
And for the first time,
Maya felt as if the lost parts of herself were beginning to come back together.
She was no longer running from the girl she used to be.
I won't forget you,
Maya said.
The child's form began to fade,
The garden around them glowing brighter,
Until Maya was standing alone,
Feeling whole and at peace.
