Albert Albatross soars for hours and sometimes days without touching solid ground.

He circles the globe in search of the most excellent waves to surf year-round.

Albert has an extraordinary ability.

He surfs the ocean waves with skill,

Focus,

And agility.

Albert learned to surf about 21 years ago in Waimea Bay,

A beautiful beach in Oahu,

Hawaii where surfing is still popular to this very day.

So many years ago,

When Albert first learned to surf,

He was just planning on dropping into the ocean for a quick spell.

He had no idea that he had just dropped into a tremendously powerful ocean swell.

Albert was overcome by the force of the underwater current flow.

He lost sense of direction and had no sense of where to go.

A helpful human paddled by and placed Albert on his surfboard.

Albert's coherence and balance was again restored.

Kai was the name of the surfer who helped Albert out.

A gracious act,

No doubt.

Kai brought Albert back safely to the beach.

Albert fell in love with the idea of surfing and asked Kai if he was able to teach.

For months on end,

Kai taught Albert to ride.

It wasn't easy,

But Albert tried and he tried.

Now 21 years later,

Albert and Kai ride waves in stride.

Kai taught Albert to measure waves using the Hawaiian scale.

One-foot waves are ankle-high in appearance.

Two-foot waves are up to your knee in clearance.

Waist-high three-foot,

Chest-high four.

Shoulder to head in scale provide six-foot waves to explore.

Overhead waves range from six feet to 11 feet in height.

To see these waves is truly an awe-inspiring sight.

Albert and Kai have even surfed the rare double overhead 12-foot wave.

Certainly those who dare to ride that kind of wave are both skillful and brave.

As December comes to an end,

Albert says goodbye to his human friend.

Albert is off to fly to his next seasonal surf spot.

He'll fly to Sri Lanka,

Then Costa Rica for a month or two.

Then Albert will surf the waves in Mexico for another few.

Wherever the big doublehead over waves are brewing,

I'll guarantee you I know what Albert Albatross is doing.
