Clearing Emotional Clutter
Come with me on an amazing walk through a relaxing country garden. We'll travel past waterfountains, hedges and comfortable swing chairs. Peruse through an art gallery and library. Stroll along a beautiful beach and visit a delightful fairground, all while releasing old emotional baggage from the past.
Transcript
Find a comfortable place.
Sit or recline.
Have a shuffle around and get into the most comfortable position you can.
And when you're in that comfortable position I want you to take a few nice long slow deep breaths and in your own time close those eyes down.
And remember that for the next few moments nothing else matters except you relaxing and listening to my voice,
Allowing nothing at all to disturb you,
Bother you or even interest you.
None of those outside sounds that arrive will trouble you.
External things,
People talking,
Phones ringing,
Doors closing.
Perhaps at times you may not even notice the sensation of clothing on your skin or the feel of the weight of your own body.
All of these things are just outside things,
They don't matter.
They don't affect you right now,
They're not important so you can completely ignore them and bring your attention back to your breathing.
Nothing to worry about,
Nothing to bother about.
You can relax completely,
Calmly and safely,
Allowing every part of you to go limp,
Loose and relaxed.
Feel every muscle,
Every one of them just relaxing completely.
Allow any tension to begin to leave,
Any pressure,
Any stress,
Any sensations of negativity or tension just being allowed to leave,
To drift away.
And now that you're feeling a little more relaxed I want you to imagine that you're standing in a beautiful country garden.
A country garden with grass,
Hedges,
Pathways.
It's a warm summer's evening,
There's a blue sky up above,
Perhaps an occasional fluffy white cloud drifting by.
Perhaps the grass has been recently cut,
Maybe you can smell that scent of newly mown grass.
In the center of this garden is a large fountain.
You watch the jets of water shooting skywards,
Noticing thousands of tiny rainbows as each drop of water forms into a mist and refracts the sunlight.
This garden is a very peaceful place,
A place for you to feel very much at ease,
Calm and comfortable.
As you look past the fountain you notice that there are some steps,
Steps leading down to a lower part of the garden.
So I want you now to make your way past that water fountain,
Noticing how there's a path just to the left of that fountain,
So make your way past that fountain now.
And as you pass the fountain you might feel the occasional splash of water as the mist hits your face.
Now you've passed the fountain.
I'm now going to take you down to the lower part of the garden and as I count each number of the steps you can take that step down and become more and more relaxed.
Let's start with ten,
Taking the first step down now.
Nine,
More and more relaxed.
Eight,
Moving down easily.
Seven,
Relaxing more and more.
Six,
Five,
Letting every muscle go.
Four,
Even karma.
Three,
Even karma still.
Two,
And one,
Stepping down onto a gravel pathway.
Now feeling more relaxed than perhaps you've felt for a long,
Long time.
Standing on a gravel pathway at the bottom of those steps and on the other side of this path there's a large garden swing chair.
A swing chair full of soft,
Velvety cushions.
So I want you now to cross this path,
To go and sit yourself down on that swing chair.
And as you sit yourself down you feel yourself sinking into those cushions.
You feel as if they're wrapping themselves all around you.
This chair is your place of safety and wherever we go on our journey together,
If anything causes you concern or worry or upsets you,
You can instantly bring yourself right back here to this chair.
Feeling completely safe,
Where nothing can harm you,
Disturb you or affect you.
I'm going to leave you here just for a few moments to settle,
To get used to this feeling of security,
Of safety.
Okay,
Now it's time to move on and there'll be times when I'll ask you to do something.
If I ask you to do something I'll leave a bit of time for you to perform that task and then I'll start talking again.
So now let's follow that gravel pathway through this lower part of the garden.
It's very peaceful here.
Listening to the sounds of the garden,
The grass is well cut,
There are flower beds all around,
Well-manicured hedges and bushes,
Birds flitting and flying around everywhere.
Perhaps you can even hear the gentle hum of insects buzzing about their business.
Very relaxed and peace.
And ahead of you now,
The path is leading towards a large hedge,
Where you can see an old oak door an oak door that has a big brass handle.
I want you to walk over to the door and turn the handle,
Open that door and walk through that door,
Closing the door behind you.
And as you close the door behind you,
You notice how you've now entered a large room,
A very large room.
And the windows are very high up near the roof and the sunlight is pouring in through them.
On the ceiling there are crystal chandeliers hanging down and as the sunlight shines through those crystals,
They reflect.
They fill the room with a very soft warm light and as your eyes now grow accustomed to the light,
You notice that all the walls of this huge room are covered in pictures,
Photographs and there are lots of shelves full of books.
This room almost reminds you of an art gallery crossed with a library.
As you start looking at all the pictures and the books,
You realize that they all relate to different moments within your life.
There are some pictures or books reminding you of all the happy,
The joyous moments,
The great times,
The fantastic experiences and there are other pictures and other books that show all the bad things.
The times when you felt hurt,
Bullied,
Insulted.
Times when perhaps you've been told you are or made to feel like you are useless or stupid or unworthy.
There might be books and pictures reminding you of traumatic times where situations have happened that have caused fright and fear.
Any of the things that have caused you any kind of hurt or negativity,
The pictures and the books are all here mixed in with the happy events.
As you look towards the center of this room,
There's a very large trolley,
A trolley that's easy to push and a trolley that could store a lot of pictures or books.
So in a moment I'm going to get you to spend some time walking around this room,
Filling that trolley with any pictures and any books that relate to those bad things.
I'm going to give you a few moments to walk around the room,
Taking as much time as you need to get everything that needs to be removed.
When you think you've finished have another check around.
When you're certain that you've filled that trolley with all the pictures and all the books that relate to those bad situations,
Times,
Places,
Events,
People,
The bad things.
When you filled that trolley with all those bad things you can simply return to the center of the room,
Scanning around the room just to see if you've missed anything at all.
I'll give you a few moments right now and then I'll continue.
Okay that's great,
Well done.
For now we're going to make our way to the end of this room,
But if you feel that you've missed anything you can always return to this room on another occasion and find the books or the pictures that represent whatever's been missed.
But for now at the far end of this room you notice a red door.
I want you to push that trolley towards the red door now and as you approach the door it opens automatically for you.
Push the trolley through that door and the door closes gently behind you.
You're now entering a large boiler room and at the far end of this room is a large furnace.
The furnace door is open,
You can feel the heat from that fire coming from it.
You can also see the flames dancing inside the furnace,
Burning up all the fuel in there.
This is where I want you to have some fun.
In a moment I'm going to ask you to unload all the items in that trolley into the furnace.
I want you to take each picture or each book and throw it into that furnace,
Having as much fun as you can.
As you take each item from the trolley it's important however that before you throw it into that furnace you forgive it.
You forgive it for any hurt that it's caused you and you also forgive yourself for having allowed it to hurt you or disturb you or upset you in the first place.
I'll give you another few moments so go now have fun getting rid of all this stuff that has caused you so much pain.
Well done.
Now you've emptied that trolley and double-checked there's nothing left.
You have a look around and notice a blue door at the side of the room.
I want you to leave the trolley where it is and make your way towards the blue door and as before that door will open automatically and as it does I want you to just make your way through that door.
Walk through the door now and as you walk through the door you once again notice how you're in the outdoors again.
Outdoors in the open on a beautiful golden sandy beach.
It's still a warm summer's evening.
The sea is calm and blue as it reflects the clear blue sky and the waves gently lapping at the shoreline.
All is calm and peaceful here.
It's a very calm and happy place.
As you begin to stretch to open yourself to the warmth of the Sun you realize you feel much lighter,
Much freer than you felt a little while ago.
You feel a couple of inches taller and gone is that crumpled negative feeling that you were so used to for such a long time.
I want you to soak in these newfound feelings,
Rejoice in them and as you do so I want you also to start making your way along that beach.
There is no one else here so you can do whatever you want to do.
Perhaps imagine taking your shoes off,
Going for a little paddle in the cool sun or just feeling the warmth of the sand between your toes.
As you walk along gradually becoming aware of music playing in the distance,
Voices.
Walking towards that sound and as you get closer you realize the music is coming from a fairground.
Getting closer and closer to that fairground now you start to smell familiar smells.
Perhaps the smell of generators powering the electricity for the rides and the stalls.
Now picking up the smell of food,
Hot dogs,
Hamburgers,
Fried onions perhaps,
Closer still the sweeter scents.
Perhaps candy floss,
Fairy floss,
Toffee apples,
Ice cream.
You continue to walk now and are walking off that beach into the fairground which is filled with happy people,
Old and young,
All shapes and sizes,
Colors and creams.
All happy,
Having fun.
You make your way between the storms,
People turn towards you and smile.
You feel welcome here,
Accepted and ahead of you in the center of that fairground is a large marquee tent.
Above the door there's a large sign that says hall of mirrors.
Make your way into that tent,
Go right into the center of that tent.
Now as you look around you're surrounded by hundreds of mirrors,
All different shapes and sizes,
But there's something strange about them.
As you look a little closer into each one you realize that there are no distorted images.
No matter what size or shape the mirror is,
The reflection you're seeing is the same.
You're seeing the real you.
You're seeing a more confident,
Assertive you.
You're seeing yourself full of self-belief,
Self-confidence,
Self-esteem,
Full of health,
Full of happiness,
Full of smiles.
Now once again I'm going to leave you for a while.
I want you to take a little walk around this room and look at all the mirrors.
Absorb information from all the reflections of you.
Absorb the reflections that you're seeing of the you that you want to be,
The you that you now are,
Because you really are that person.
Take a good look in the mirrors.
So call the reflections in.
Okay it's time to make our way back now,
So I want you to retrace your steps out of this marquee tent,
Out to the fairground,
Heading back towards the beach,
And just before you leave the tent there's a full-length mirror.
Look into it.
Look into it and see the real you reflected back,
And as you continue to look that reflection comes out of the mirror and melts into you,
Bringing with it all the qualities of the real you.
No challenges,
No blockages,
No fears.
Allow that reflection to soak all the way into you.
Feel it filling you up from inside,
And take a deep breath and leave the tent,
And as you walk through the fairground,
Notice now how so many people are smiling.
Perhaps they're even waving to you.
Some are coming up to you and shaking your hand,
Giving you a friendly pat on the back.
They're recognising the real you.
Notice how good it feels to feel accepted for who you really are.
It's time now to leave the fairground and step back onto the beach,
Making your way back the way you came.
Just sensing how much better you're feeling now,
Perhaps even lighter,
Even freer than you were when you initially left the boiler room.
And I want you to look at the footprints you made in the sand,
The ones you made as you headed towards the fairground initially,
And then compare them to the footprints that you're leaving behind you now.
I've noticed how much shallower they are now,
Because you're even lighter.
You're free from all the misery,
All the pain,
All the conditions of the past.
You are the person that you've always wanted to be,
And it feels great doesn't it?
I want you to take a seat on the warm sand,
And as you sit down on that sand I want you to close your eyes and take yourself in your mind forward one year into your own future,
And notice what you see.
Look at your own future.
Notice perhaps where you are,
Notice how you are,
Notice how you're enjoying your life on all aspects of it,
Feeling even more confident,
Calm,
Assertive,
Happy,
Content.
Notice all these different aspects of your life,
Perhaps personal aspects,
Connections,
Relationships.
Notice any professional aspects.
And I want you to bring back those images to your life now.
Bring back those images from your future,
Bring them back to your life now,
And keep total recall of them.
Bring them back to the present time as you sit on the beach,
Because now it's time to open those eyes to stand upon the beach and to continue with the return journey.
So ahead of you now are some sand dunes,
And you can make out a path leading up through the sand dunes,
And I want you to follow that path.
At the top of the path you get to a large wall with a gate.
Open the gate,
Make your way through the gate,
And it closes behind you,
And you notice how you're now back in the lower part of the garden,
The garden that we were in before.
Make your way back along that gravel path towards your swing chair.
Notice the steps leading up to the higher garden.
We are now back at your place of safety,
So again I want you to sit down on that great big comfortable swing chair.
Sit yourself down,
And notice this time how you don't seem to sink so deeply into those soft velvety cushions,
But again it still feels amazing.
Notice how safe and secure you still feel.
At the start of our journey I told you that this chair was your place of safety.
I'm now changing that.
I'm giving you this chair to take with you for all time.
If at any time in the present or in the future,
If at any time you feel stressed,
Under pressure,
Threatened,
Or upset,
You can take yourself somewhere quiet,
You can close those eyes,
And you can instantly imagine that you're back here,
Completely safe,
Calm,
Comfortable,
And protected sitting in this comfy chair.
It's now time to make our way back to normal time,
Back to the present.
So I want you to walk across the gravel path to the bottom of the steps,
And in a moment I'm going to count you back up the steps,
Going from one up to ten.
But before that there's one final thing.
To the right of these steps there's a waste bin.
And as you look at it you realize that you're wearing the very ragged torn remains of a dirty old coat.
This grotty old garment,
It contains the last vestiges,
The remnants,
The residue from all the hurt that we removed in the boiler room.
Take that nasty old thing off now,
Throw it into the waste bin,
And as you do you'll notice a bright flash of light as it's destroyed,
Gone forever.
Now on the left side of the steps is a coat stand,
Which as it happens has a new coat hanging there,
This new coat.
It contains all that is the new you,
The confident you,
The one filled with self-belief,
Full of assertiveness,
Feelings of empowerment.
Take that coat,
Put it on now.
This coat has been tailor made for you,
It's unique to you alone.
See and feel how perfectly it fits you.
This coat can't be seen by anyone else,
But as you wear it everyone else will notice the difference in you.
You now have the opportunity to be exactly who you want to be,
So feel that new energy being unleashed,
Being more and more in the present moment,
Becoming more your true self,
Respecting yourself,
Allowing positive emotions to guide you into new adventures,
Committing to each moment as a new and a fresh experience,
Leaving the past behind.
Today you're creating a bigger better stronger version of yourself,
Allowing your awareness and your courage and confidence to expand,
Choosing to allow into your life new beliefs,
New attitudes that will set you free.
So now I'm going to take you back up the steps as I count from one up to ten,
You'll become more and more alert and refreshed,
Continuing to allow the release of the past version of yourself safely,
Quietly.
The release of the old responses will process gradually at a speed that's right for you,
So get ready to return to here and now,
This moment the present,
Where you'll become wide wide awake and alert,
Feeling amazing inside,
Better than you've done for a long long time,
Feeling excited,
Energized about all the happy adventures ahead.
When we reach the number ten,
I want you to take a deep breath,
Perhaps wriggling those fingers and those toes and then opening your eyes when you're ready and when you open your eyes you'll be feeling completely relaxed,
Refreshed.
Let's make our way up the steps now.
One,
Two,
Three,
Four,
Five,
Six,
Seven,
Eight,
Nine and ten,
A nice deep breath,
Eyes opening,
Have a stretch if you want.
Welcome back.

Incredible. As someone with ADHD I struggle heavily with guilt and shame about not being able to sit still or relax during medications. This storytelling however helps me fully immerse. Instead of getting obsessive about trying not to itch or cough or move, I just imagine the me in the story is doing those things, so it feels natural and doesnโt pull me out of the meditation. Also I love the story in general, it was so gentle but so joyful. Thank you!! This certainly changed meditation for me and I canโt tell you how much I appreciate it.
