How often do we think of boredom as a bad thing?
You know,
That dull,
Restless itch where nothing feels interesting enough?
And we scramble to fill it by scrolling or snacking or refreshing our tabs.
Anything to escape that uncomfortable pause.
But what if boredom isn't a problem to fix?
What if it's actually a hidden invitation?
So today we're going to sit with boredom.
Not as an enemy,
But as a gentle guide.
Let's find out what happens when we stop running from it.
So let's go ahead and settle in.
No need to find a perfect posture.
Just find a place where your body feels supported.
Let your hands rest.
Let your eyes soften or close.
And take a slow breath in through the nose.
And let it out easily through the mouth.
Now let's do it again.
Inhale.
And exhale.
Now let's get curious about boredom.
And you might even notice it already.
That tiny little voice in the back of your head.
Is this it?
Shouldn't we be doing something more?
And if it shows up,
That's perfect.
There's no need to change it.
Just notice it.
You can feel into the sensation.
Maybe figure out where you feel it in your body.
Could be a fidget in your hands.
Or a bouncing knee.
Or maybe a general restless buzz beneath the skin.
Whatever it is,
That's okay.
Instead of fixing it,
Let's breathe into it.
Imagine your breath is giving it space.
We're not pushing it away.
We're just saying,
It's okay.
You are allowed to be here.
Here's the quiet truth.
Boredom is often the space where new things are born.
But it needs patience.
It needs you to stay a while.
So let's stay here.
Let's notice the thoughts that pop up.
The itch to check your phone.
The switch gears to distract yourself or move on to the next thing.
You don't have to follow those thoughts.
You can just watch them float on by like clouds.
And underneath,
There's stillness.
Maybe you even notice there's a little sigh of relief in the quiet.
A tiny little exhale that says,
Finally.
I'm just resting here for a few more breaths.
Breathing in.
Breathing out.
And out.
We're letting the quiet be enough.
Here's the cool thing about the quiet.
When you sit with it,
You might notice the small things now.
The hum of the room.
The rhythm of your breath.
Maybe you finally hear the birds chirping.
The individual ones,
Not just the cacophony of it.
These were always here.
But boredom created the space to notice them.
As Leo Tolstoy once wrote,
Boredom,
The desire for desires.
It's not about needing more.
It's about realizing that you already have the space to create,
To wonder.
To simply be.
And so,
As you move through the rest of your day,
Just see if you can welcome boredom when it visits.
You never know,
It might be an open door to something new.
Or simply a reminder that it's okay to just be for a while.
Whenever you need that space,
It's always just a breath away.
May you be happy,
May you be healthy,
And may you be at peace.
Thank you so much for joining me today.
