Trauma Healing - Rebuilding Trust In Yourself
The experience of trauma can rob us of feeling a sense of trust and comfort within our own skin. Instead of extending self-compassion and kindness towards ourselves, we often feel a sense of shame, guilt, or embarrassment about who we are based on our past. This gently guided meditation helps you return home to yourself and see that you are worthy of feeling free from your past. This guided meditation is part of the Heal My Trauma Program created by Megan Kirk Chang, Ph.D. to help you trust again.

Hello and welcome.
This is the Heal My Trauma Guided Meditation series.
My name is Megan,
And I'm so grateful that you've chosen to spend time here today.
For today's session,
We're going to be exploring this idea of beginning to trust ourselves again.
When we've injured or experienced trauma of any kind,
Particularly over long periods of time growing up as a child,
It's not uncommon to notice the sensation of cutting ourselves off from our own compassion,
Cutting ourselves off from our own kindness and self-belief.
Instead,
We replace self-compassion with a sense of guilt or shame,
Embarrassment or humiliation about who we are based on what we experienced and also based on the way we felt we did or didn't respond or the things we did or didn't say.
We spend so much of our time telling ourselves we are not deserving of a life of ease or freedom.
If it's one thing I know,
It's that you are worth feeling free from your past.
You are worthy of being in this moment right now fully present without the past surfacing or robbing you of your healing efforts without the past bubbling up and robbing you of the joy of spending time with the people you love,
Of robbing you of reconnecting with the truest authentic part of who you are that's never left you.
We lose trust in ourselves.
We lose faith in believing that we have what it takes to navigate our healing journey and instead we look outside of ourselves.
We look to other people to tell us how to navigate the deep hurt within us.
And I really believe that only we know how to truly navigate this journey for ourselves,
But somewhere along the way we have forgotten.
Beginning the process of returning home to yourself and trusting who you are and trusting that being in your own skin is the way to heal is often awkward or really uncomfortable at first.
In some ways it's almost easier to keep ourselves hostage to the thoughts that we're not enough,
We're not deserving or not worthy.
As human beings we would rather stay in a familiar discomfort than step outside into the unknown and see what's on the other side of these gripping thoughts.
But I truly believe that at some point in our lives we know deep down that we need to start to slowly return home to ourselves and access the deep wisdom,
The intuition and the self-compassion that has always been within us.
We come to a time where we know we need to let this part of ourselves come through.
We come to realize that it's time now to slowly remove our shields and our protective layers so that we can see and be with the part of ourselves we've been missing all along.
Building trust in ourselves starts with showing up for ourselves for one breath more than before,
Even on the days where you feel that you are the worst version of yourself.
So taking a couple of moments now to return into your body.
Imagine dropping your attention from the thoughts,
The judgments,
The loops going on in your mind and drawing your awareness down below the neck.
Bringing your awareness into your body.
Spending as much time as you'd like,
Sensing and noticing feeling into different areas of the body with your attention.
Noticing without judgment what the physical tone of your body feels like in this moment.
Remembering that there's no right or wrong thing that you should or shouldn't feel.
We're just bringing our sense of space and ease and awareness to our body in this moment.
When you feel ready,
Drawing your attention now down to the space just behind the heart.
Trying not to assess whether you're doing it right or wrong.
Just feeling into the heart space.
Noticing any sensations,
Any feelings.
They can be positive,
They can be neutral,
Negative or bored,
Doesn't matter.
Just tuning into the space in the body without judgment.
As you connect your awareness to your heart space,
You may wish to draw one or both hands and gently place contact over top of your heart.
As we bring this gentle contact,
Just sensing and noticing what feelings or sensations arise to the surface.
Knowing you may feel or think all sorts of things and that this is normal.
Remembering to return to your awareness and attention to your heart space without judgment,
Without evaluation.
Just letting it be as it is.
You may wish to repeat these words to yourself as you connect to your heart.
I'm here now.
And I'm listening.
I'm here now.
And I'm listening.
Try to gently repeat these words without getting caught in a storyline or thought loop.
Notice if this happens and gently bring your attention back to connecting to heart.
Showing up for yourself and listening.
As you feel comfortable,
Continue to draw your attention to your flow of breath and see if you might direct the breath into the heart space.
Feeling the sense of focused awareness of breath to heart,
Hands to heart and compassionately listening.
You will notice as you take your awareness more deeply into the heart space that all sorts of thoughts,
Images,
Sensations may come to the surface.
Know that this is normal.
This is the process of returning home and building trust in ourselves.
When we can hold space for our experience exactly as it's unfolding without expectation,
Without trying to force an outcome.
Just being with ourselves as we are in this moment.
And when we do this over time,
We create space to allow healing to occur.
I'm here now.
And I'm listening.
I'm here now.
And I'm listening.
I wish you a day of ease and a day of freedom ahead.
Thanks for tuning in.
We'll see you next time.

I found this to be helpful in a time of stress and grief. I listened to this while I was walking and I found myself going from a fast pace to a slow stroll by the end of the track. My breath went from short and shallow to deep and long. I felt more at ease. The music and words were soothing, comforting and gentle, which is what I needed. Thank you. πππ

She knew exactly how I feel. I know I am not alone now. I have a journey on a path of healing. Listening to her supports the direction and process I will continue to move forward with. I will take her positive words in my heart. Her guidance demonstrates the importance of checking in with myself. Thank you

Your explanation of how we unintentionally abandon ourselves after trauma and how this translates to lack of trust resonates with me. So much.
