Meet your Teacher

Philip Gay is a self-taught musician with a passion for a variety of musical instruments. He discovered the Native American Flute while visiting the Southwest, and found its innate and haunting voice to be a calming window into a mindful meditation practice. It is a very foundational instrument to learn and play, but the sound of the flute has the potential to create a transformative state of mind. Learning to play the Recorder becomes a very affordable entry point into creating similar sounds, and teachers can apply the lessons from this resource to their own classrooms where students have access to Recorders. Both instruments offer a unique pathway into musical expression. Philip's work as a video and documentary producer in Public Television has enabled him to interact with a variety of musicians, artists, and communities across the country. This course includes samples of that work with a few shared stories that touch on worldview, indigenous identity, and self-expression. Philip also has a background as a video producer for online learning projects in higher education, and the design of this course takes into account that experience.
