The shadow is the unconscious realm of the psyche that contains parts of ourselves that we repress,
Deny,
Or hide from others.
It can consist of traits,
As well as accompanying emotions,
Beliefs,
And desires.
But like all personal qualities,
There is value in the shadow when brought into conscious awareness.
Engaging with our shadow is a vital step towards self-knowledge and attaining wholeness within ourselves.
Before we begin this exercise,
Briefly recall a situation where you weren't entirely satisfied with how you behaved,
Or felt a niggling doubt about your choices.
We're going to be engaging with the part of you giving rise to this conflict in yourself.
And once you've got that,
Just find a quiet and comfortable place to sit,
Or lie down,
Where you won't be disturbed.
Close your eyes,
And take a couple of deep breaths,
Just allowing the mind and the body to relax naturally.
Keep your attention on the breath for now.
If at any point you do get distracted,
Just bring your attention back to the exercise.
And now,
Imagine a setting that resonates with your concept of the shadow.
This place could be mysterious,
Unknown,
Or simply quiet and secluded.
It feels like a place where the hidden or repressed aspects of your personality may reside.
In this setting,
You notice a shadowy figure emerging in the distance.
This figure represents your shadow,
The unrealized part of you that is giving rise to conflict in yourself.
Observe this figure more closely,
Noticing its form and its behavior.
Be aware of any feelings it evokes in you.
Approach this figure with openness and curiosity.
Now you're going to ask this figure a series of questions,
And as you do,
Simply state the question and observe how it responds.
Ask the figure,
Who are you?
What do you represent in my life?
What do you have to teach me?
How am I limiting myself by denying your presence?
How can I integrate this knowledge into my conscious life?
How might acknowledging you enhance my well-being,
Personal growth,
And freedom?
Once you've heard the answers,
It's your turn to give a message to the shadow.
Take some time now to say to the shadow whatever you would like to say.
Thank the shadow figure now for its insights.
Recognize that every part of you,
Even those hidden in the shadow,
Contributes to your whole self.
Remember to carry the lessons and insights gained with you as you go about your daily life.
Whatever feelings or emotions came up during this exercise can be worked with further in daily life or through emotional integration exercises.
So just bring your attention back to the room now,
Noticing any sounds or sensations,
And in your own time,
Opening your eyes again.
