Athletes use visualization to practice for their sport.
There's good evidence that visualizing a success is similar in the brain to actually experiencing that success.
So if you can imagine yourself feeling happy,
Relaxed,
And at peace,
And if you can really visualize it,
You will activate the areas of your brain that would light up if you were actually feeling that way.
So let's get started with this peaceful place visualization.
Begin by finding a place where you can be comfortable,
Either sitting or lying down.
Allow your eyes to close and begin to focus on your breath.
Allow your breath deep down into your belly and exhale slowly.
Notice that all the muscles in your body are relaxing from the top of your head down to the tips of your toes.
Each time you exhale,
You might imagine releasing tension from your body,
From your mind and thoughts.
Just letting go of that stress.
And with every breath you inhale,
Feeling your body drifting deeper into relaxation.
Imagine it getting a little lighter as it fills with the air you're breathing.
And now I'll invite you to imagine going to the most peaceful place you can think of.
It can be a real place,
A make-believe place,
Or some combination of the two.
Begin to imagine it as vividly as if you are actually there.
Consider the answers to these questions.
What does this peaceful scene look like?
Looking around in your mind's eye,
Taking in the shapes and the colors and the textures.
And what sounds can you hear here in this peaceful place?
And if you were to be really quiet,
What sounds would you hear faint in the distance?
What time of day is it here in this peaceful place?
And I'll ask you,
How can you tell?
Sensing in,
Paying attention to all those cues that tell you approximately the time of day.
And a similar question for you,
What is the temperature here in this peaceful place?
Again,
Sensing into your body,
How can you tell if it's warm or cool?
Where do you feel that?
And what are you touching or contacting physically in this peaceful place?
For example,
Are you in contact with the ground?
Can you feel it supporting you?
Can you feel the air against your skin?
And if you were to reach out and touch something,
What would it be?
How would it look?
How would it feel?
And taking another nice deep breath in,
What does the air smell like here in this peaceful place?
You are very comfortable in your peaceful place and there are no disturbances.
This is the most peaceful place in the world for you.
Continue breathing and continue just allowing yourself to be there,
Feeling a sense of peace flow through you and a sense of well-being.
Every fiber of your being loves this place.
Notice if any positive feelings arise when you envision this place and enjoy them,
Allow them to grow stronger.
Remember that you can return to this place anytime you need to relax and recharge.
Sensing in again,
Looking around,
Listening and feeling.
See if you can memorize some of the details of it now.
All the sights,
All the sounds,
Every smell,
And every sensation.
For now you're going to get ready to leave this peaceful place,
But before you turn your attention away,
Imagine yourself leaving this place on a familiar path.
You'll be able to return any time you'd like to rest,
Recharge,
Reduce stress,
And find some peace.
Carrying that sense of peace with you,
Start to turn your awareness back to the room that you're in.
You might start by wiggling your fingers and toes.
You might become more aware of any sounds in the room.
Allow your peaceful place to fade away gently,
Knowing that you'll be back next time.
And when you're ready,
Gently opening your eyes and letting the light back in.
And carrying this sense of peace forward with you into your day or into your sleep.
