Hello,
My name is Lou Redman.
Thank you so much for being here.
One of the foundations of personal growth is taking full responsibility for our lives.
As in Michael Bernard Beckwith's four stages of awakening,
We move from life is happening to us,
Victim consciousness,
To life is happening by us,
Where we actually have agency to make change in our life and the shift is monumental.
We go from victim to conscious responder.
We become the thermostat,
Not the thermometer.
I first heard this concept from Kate Northrup.
A thermostat creates the energy of the room while a thermometer is influenced by the outer temperature.
Most people are thermometers.
The stock market goes up.
They feel good.
It goes down,
They feel bad.
Thermometers are waiting for others to create change,
Be it the government,
Institutions,
Or some outside force.
Thermostats are the change makers,
Unshakable in the midst of collective huffs and fusses while radiating calm,
Clarity,
And direction.
It reminds me of the biblical story where a storm came upon the sea.
Jesus' disciples awoke in fear,
Thinking they were going to drown.
Jesus replied,
Oh,
You of little faith,
Why are you so afraid?
Then he calmed the waters and the storm.
I've been reflecting on this story a lot in our current times.
It's easy to feel the economic and political storms rising,
But what if there's nothing to fear?
We get to choose how we respond.
We can be like a spiritual master influencing the temperature rather than being thrown off every time the wind blows.
Where in your life are you being tossed around?
Don't let the wind and waves distract you.
You are loved.
You are guided.
You are cared for.
Keep the faith.
Be the thermostat,
Not the thermometer.
Sending you so much love on your journey.
And if you are looking for resources on how do you be the thermostat and not the thermometer,
