Hello,
Welcome.
My name is The Redman.
Thank you so much for being here.
I want to talk about ideas.
Why is it that some people have ideas and then are able to take that idea and bring them out into the world,
Make them real,
Create a service,
Create a business,
Create art,
Create a project,
Whatever it might be.
And some people live in ideas,
Have a lot of ideas,
But don't feel they can bring them into the world.
This was me for a long time.
There was a time when I didn't let myself be creative with ideas.
I was working a regular job and I would just follow the task given to me.
At 24 years old,
I wasn't aware of my own creativity,
Which seems like a disappointment to our public education system,
But I'll take the responsibility.
More than anything,
I wasn't around people who were dreaming and doing.
I didn't have mentors and coaches who could reflect back my own capacity and hold me accountable to stretch what I thought was possible.
And then the more I got into personal development,
The more I saw the chasm between people who attended seminars and got excited about possibilities and those who actually got to work and did something with their inspiration.
And what I realized that the successful realize early on is that it's not about having the perfect idea,
Waiting for the quote unquote right time.
It's about accelerating the rate of failure so that you can learn and grow as fast as you can.
Instagram started as a location-based mobile check-in app.
They found that the feature people loved most was sharing pictures of where they were,
Which led them to focus entirely on mobile photo sharing.
They could have never known that unless they got started.
A decent idea executed well is worth more than a so-called million-dollar idea that's talked about for hours but stays in the dream world.
One of my favorite humans,
Derek Sivers,
Talks about this in an article called,
Ideas are Just a Multiplier of Execution.
He says,
Ideas are worth nothing unless executed.
They are just a multiplier.
Execution is worth millions.
He then shares an explanation where you can have a weak idea,
But a brilliant execution,
And that being so much worth more than a great idea with weak execution.
It's really,
I'm not going to share though,
I'm not going to speak all of the chart here because that wouldn't make sense in a talk,
But it really leads to the point that it doesn't much matter the idea.
Someone had the idea for a pet rock and you could hear that at a dinner party before that actually existed and be like,
That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.
But someone thought about it and said,
You know what?
I'm going to make it work because I'm going to execute it.
I'm going to create a brand.
I'm going to make this thing something that people want.
And they took an idea and it succeeded in that way.
And so what I'm trying to get to is just whatever the idea is.
Don't feel like you have to wait for the perfect one.
Just get started.
How can you just get started on it?
We get to control that.
My encouragement for you this week is to take action on one of the ideas that you have or have had and stop waiting for the best one to come along.
It might turn into something different by taking action.
It might turn into something better than you could have planned.
It might turn into you selling Instagram for a billion dollars.
Maybe not,
But who knows?
We can dream.
And so go ahead,
Take action.
One of my favorite mantras is now,
Not how.
Instead of asking how this is,
How is this going to work?
How's this going to look?
Just take action.
Now,
Get feedback,
Fail faster,
Allow that to take you to your next step.
And I promise you,
You are going to be much further along,
Learn so much more,
Have so much more fun than if you were to wait around for the perfect inspiration for the perfect moment.
Celebrating you as always,
Rooting for you as always.
