Most humans notice they feel empty, lost and like a shell at one point or another, especially those of us who have grown up in homes shattered by alcoholism, addiction, narcissism, or toxic dynamics between our parents, or emotional neglect. The neuroscience is clear, growing up in chaos causes brain changes that are similar to those that occur in those who have faced war and battle. So, no, we are not being dramatic when we experience things like panic attacks or crippling over giving. Those are just two ways our brains are trying to keep us safe. But beneath it all, the chamber of the subconscious mind houses an innocent inner child, observing everything on repeat, chained to neurological, habitual processes designed to keep us safe. At the worst of it, children who have experienced trauma often don't even realize it's happening. Our entire purpose is to avoid pain and dear ones, that is the opposite of living with true meaning and purpose.
