You finally have the afternoon off and nothing to do.
No one needs you.
And instead of relaxing,
You feel this strange,
Restless energy under your skin,
Like your body is still bracing for something that hasn't happened yet.
Some part of you is just.
.
.
Scanning for a problem that isn't there.
Like your nervous system is still on standby,
You know,
Waiting for something to just go wrong.
And you just.
You just cannot rest.
So you get up and you find a task.
You check your phone one more time just anything to not to sit there in the stillness doing nothing.
If rest has never actually felt restful to you,
You know,
If it feels more like.
Exposure than relief.
I want to reframe something for you today because.
.
.
There is nothing wrong with that.
You for feeling this way.
But I just want to let you know that RAS isn't a scheduling problem.
For a lot of people,
It's actually a nervous system problem.
Because your body has to believe that it's safe before it can actually let go and for some of us that belief was was never built.
That sense of safety.
Doesn't arrive.
By the end of this video,
You'll understand why stillness can feel more threatening than busyness.
To some of us and what's actually happening in your body when that happens.
And one small way to start teaching your system that rests is not the same thing as danger.
Hi,
My name is Kinga and I'm a nervous system and somatic trauma release practitioner.
Let's get into it.
So stillness isn't just neutral for every body.
Here's something that surprises people.
Is that for a regulated nervous system,
Stillness reads as apathy.
But for a nervous system that spent a long long time being on alert,
Watching for a parent's mood or managing chaos and staying useful so you wouldn't be a burden.
Stillness,
For these people,
Reads as something else entirely.
It reads as unmonitored,
Unguarded,
And unguarded has never felt safe.
So if your safety wants to.
Depended on.
Staying busy or staying helpful or staying one step ahead of a problem before it happened.
Slowing down.
It's not going to feel peaceful to you.
It feels like you've taken your hands off the wheel.
Some part of you,
Still running old code,
Believes that the moment you stop scanning Something will go wrong.
Something bad is going to happen.
So your body.
.
.
Manufactures a reason to keep moving.
A task that.
Really should get done right now.
That's what your body makes you believe,
Or a conversation that you should probably have,
Or a scroll that fills a space before.
The quiet gets in the way.
Too loud.
And this is not like laziness trying to be avoided.
And it's also not discipline that you're lacking,
It's just protection.
Protection misapplied and outdated.
And I want to name something here.
That took me a long time to understand in my own body.
So regulation.
Is not the same thing as capacity.
Because regulation is being able to calm yourself down after something activates you.
Capacity is different.
Capacity is how wide your window of tolerance actually is.
Like how much stillness,
How much stimulation,
How much life.
Your nervous system can hold.
Before it tips into fight,
Flight,
Freeze,
Or shutting down entirely.
And a lot of people work on.
Work really hard on regulation,
You know,
The breathing,
The grounding,
The 5-4-3-2-1 technique and still cannot rest because regulation only helps you come back from the edge.
It doesn't actually widen the window itself.
I think that takes.
Something slower,
Something.
.
.
Repeated,
Something felt in the body over and over until it becomes.
.
.
Believable.
And that's a completely different kind of work then.
Gritting your teeth through one more breathing exercise during a panic,
Like mid-panic.
So it's slower.
Cumulative.
And people never get taught it because most of what's out there teaches you to manage a crisis,
Not to actually grow your capacity for peace.
In this stillness.
Instead of trying to.
.
.
Force yourself to relax,
Which almost never works.
I'm sure you tried before.
Because you can't just muscle your way into safety.
I want you to try something smaller today.
Or the next time you get to sit down to rest.
And maybe that restlessness rises in you.
Just don't fight it and don't obey it either.
Just stay and notice.
Like notice where,
Where in your body the urge actually happens.
To stay and notice.
Notice where that urge.
.
.
To get up and do something actually lives in your body.
Is it in your chest?
Your jaw,
Your shoulders,
Your legs,
Just locate it.
And you're not trying to make it go away,
You're just.
.
.
Proving to your nervous system that you can actually be present.
With the discomfort of stillness without it being an emergency,
Without you having to act on it.
And that single act of staying and noticing and not fleeing the sensation is a tiny piece of evidence that your body needs but also logs in the moment.
And nervous systems change through repeated evidence.
Not through reading more or getting an insight in a single sitting,
But like doing the same practice over and over.
And one time won't do it,
But one time is where every hundred times start.
So let's actually practice a version of that right now together for a few seconds.
So let your hands rest wherever they are.
Let your shoulders drop.
Just slightly.
Without forcing it.
And notice,
Is there an urge right now?
To be doing something else instead of watching this boring video.
Notice it.
Is there an urge right now to be doing something else entirely?
Something else other than watching this video.
You don't have to act on it,
You're just allowed to sit inside a little stillness.
Maybe a slight discomfort.
And find out that nothing bad happens if you stay.
You're not in danger.
If rest has always felt like something you have to earn,
Or something that only happens once everything else is handled.
I want you to hear this clearly.
Your body is not broken for finding stillness hard.
It's actually protecting you with information.
That is years,
Sometimes decades out of date.
You know,
That old programming that needs to be updated at one point.
And again,
You don't need to force.
Whole thing or yourself and your body into peace and rest.
You just need to keep offering your nervous system small repeated proof that It's allowed to stop scanning for a while and nothing bad will happen.
Discomfort is okay.
I can be safe in discomfort.
I see you next time.
