What is senses cycling?
So senses cycling is a particular technique in meditation in which you allow your point of concentration to be the different experiences that your senses are having.
So this is a technique that is usually used in more of a present moment meditation.
So that style of meditation is one where you are focusing on experiencing the present moment through the senses.
And that is just more of a general meditation practice that is wonderful and a beautiful practice and then senses cycling is within that same world but it's a bit more specific because you cycle through your senses one by one and just naming something that that sense is experiencing so it would look like this once you came into a comfortable position you kind of dropped in settled in you would start and just say Maybe something that you hear.
Right here,
I'm outside,
So there's a lot to hear,
But I hear someone mowing their lawn.
And something I see,
I see pine needles over there.
Something I smell,
I can also smell those pine needles.
Something I feel,
I can feel a little breeze brushing across my skin.
And something I can taste,
I can almost taste that,
Like,
Earthy scent.
You know when you can almost like taste the earth?
I don't know if that's a weird thing to say.
Because there's just like this rich soil beneath me.
I can like almost taste it.
And for your whole meditation practice,
Whether it be five,
10,
15,
30,
60 minutes,
That's what you do.
Just cycle through something that you hear,
Something that you see,
Something that you smell,
Something that you taste,
Something that you feel.
You just take your time and you witness the world through your senses one by one.
I think this is such a simple,
But that doesn't mean easy,
A simple meditation technique.
However,
So the challenge lies,
Especially when it comes to meditation,
In the simple concepts,
Because meditation itself is a simple concept,
But it doesn't mean that it is easy.
So the challenge is remaining with your senses and not letting those thoughts,
That chatter of the mind,
To really pull you and distract you,
But just moving through all of your senses,
Experiencing the world just sense by sense.
And so if you've never tried sense cycling before,
I think you should give it a try.
It's a really,
Really interesting practice.
Have tried it before,
Maybe you understand a little bit more about where it came from and what makes it so great.
