This will be a breath-focused meditation,
So maybe creating a long spine.
Softening the shoulders.
Unlocking the jaws.
And letting the tongue fall away from the roof of the mouth.
An ujjayi breath is a slightly audible breath that helps to activate the throat.
Cultivate focus and build some internal heat.
So we'll begin just by taking three deep cleansing breaths to open up the airways and clear the throat.
So we'll exhale all of the air out of our lungs.
Then inhale,
Filling up all the way.
And open mouth exhale,
Letting it go.
Doing that two more times.
Big,
Deep breath in.
Open mouth exhale.
Really clearing,
Opening up the throat,
Letting it all go.
And one last one.
Then we will begin our practice by continuing to breathe but closing the lips.
With ujjayi,
The inhale is effortless.
And then as you exhale,
Keeping the lips closed,
Create space in the mouth.
And just begin to breathe out in this way.
Almost like you are yawning in the back of the throat while you exhale.
Trying that again but this time adding a slight constriction in the back of your throat which will create a little bit of a sound like an ocean wave.
It might sound like this.
Continuing to breathe,
Inhaling naturally.
Exhaling,
Creating space in the mouth like you're about to yawn and have a slight constriction in the back of the throat,
Creating that audible sound.
And just continuing with this.
It might seem a little strange or unnatural at first,
But that's okay.
Ujjayi breath is also known as ocean breath because of that sound that it makes.
Like an ocean wave rolling in and out on top of the shoreline.
And as you continue to breathe in this way,
Really focusing on that sound.
Allowing your point of concentration to be on the slightly audible exhale.
Just allowing that breath to be deep.
And smooth and rhythmic.
Inhaling naturally,
Exhaling closed lips,
Space in the mouth,
A little constriction in the back of the throat.
Continuing with this.
Focusing for about one minute solely on the sensation and the sound of the ocean breath.
And now relaxing the back of the throat.
Maybe opening the mouth a bit.
And ending the practice with three deep cleansing breaths,
Inhaling through the nose and open mouth exhale letting it go.
Maybe noticing if it feels a little bit different this time than it did at the beginning.
And then opening the eyes and closing your meditation practice.
Thank you for joining me for this short breath meditation.
Have a beautiful rest of your day.
